🗣 "Part of a professor’s job is to help students amplify their voices." This Friday, Nov. 15, at the PRSA Northeast District Conference in Syracuse, my panel "Disrupting the Narrative: How Gen Z is Reshaping the Field" puts Gen Z in the spotlight. Want a preview? Check out the Q&A below to get a sneak peek of the conversation. Big thanks to S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University for the great piece! #PublicRelations #PRSA #GenZ #PublicRelations #HigherEducation

My story begins as a college student, running around with a lot of assignments and promotions. You come across an office where you are requested to locate the names of the companies in the newspaper pages. At first, you don't comprehend anything, but as time goes on, you recognise how important this is to the profession of public relations. This was my first introduction to the concept of public relations, or PR. After receiving my degree in commerce, I started working in the operations department of a security guard company. However, I was pursuing my journalism side by side and after spending and doing some work in the field, I felt that my career path was meant to be in communication. To put it briefly, when you travel from one dimension to another, you encounter many things. Some of them cause you difficulties, while others encourage you to keep going. But your self-belief is what matters most in between these highs and lows. Believe me, no one can stop you if you've decided that you won't give up under any circumstances, and the route will be made for you on its own. #SkodaDriveofBelief #Explorebeyond

Having recently installed my own children at their respective universities, it was great fun to briefly experience the other side of the coin and give a lecture today to media studies students at NYU London! We discussed crisis communications, media relations and PR - and I learnt a few things too from the students about how they experience the media landscape. #crisiscommunications #mediarelations #publicrelations

Thank you, Nicole McDavid, for inviting me to your class. Crisis communication is one of my new passions, even though most people don't want to be in a crisis. The 5 C's of crisis communication are Concern, Commitment, Clarity, Competence, and Confidence. Everything that we do as communicators hinges on these five areas. Your audience wants to feel your concern about the topic. They want to know that the money/resources that they are spending with you are safe and you are committed to protecting their interests. They want the spokesperson to be clear and competent in their messaging and exude confidence, not arrogance. It seems simple but during a crisis, it is what makes an entry-level employee look like an expert or a seasoned professional act indifferent toward the topic. Remember the 5 C's!
On November 4th, Kristina L. Hendrix, APR, VP of Strategic Communications at The University of Alabama in Huntsville, spoke with my Crisis Communication Class about the 5C's of Crisis Communication and provided valuable insight about public relations at our campus. One of the best lessons students have learned from each Crisis Communication speaker discussion is that there are many roads on a career path and to be open to opportunities.

⭐🎓 Grad Spotlight 🎓⭐ Owen Black Graduation class of: 2021 Specialization: Public Relations What was your first role after graduating? Community Engagement Coordinator at Nine Circles Community Health Centre What did your path look like to your current position? I shifted from Nine Circles to Brandish | A Creative Agency to focus more on public relations and internal communications. I love working with a communications and growth team at Brandish as we get to share all the cool things that our team is up to and accomplishing. What is your fondest memory of CreComm? The sense of community that the program creates — if you’re looking to learn lots of employable skills, while also creating incredible friends, CreComm is the place for you. What was the most valuable skill you learned in CreComm? The ability to just try — you don’t have time to decide whether or not you are comfortable, you’ll learn what you’re capable of while you’re doing it. What advice do you have to current and/or prospective students in CreComm? There may be classes that you decide aren’t for you, but all the classes are relevant to the communications industry. Make sure to put effort into all of them as the skills they offer are worth learning! _____________________ Are you a CreComm grad and want to be featured? Shoot us a message and let's chat!
