Have you seen my Keys? Are you forgetful like me? Are you constantly misplacing your keys, wallet, phone, or even the remote control at home? Well, you’re in luck – there is a gadget that can help! Many well-known tech companies have created products that allow you to attach a small electronic device to your commonly misplaced items to help you track them if they are lost. It’s become common for people to attach them to all types of valuable items - their luggage, keys, cell phone, pet-tag, or even putting them in a coat pocket to make sure you don’t forget or lose an item while out and about. With these trackers, the user is generally required to download an application to assist in tracking your items. The application tracks them by using Bluetooth to ping large networks of other downloaded applications and cell phones (you opt-in when you download the application and accept their terms of use) and provide the user maps and data to find the item if misplaced. While this type of tracker may seem like a blessing to most, there has been quite a bit of research about ways they can be altered or used by the adversary to prove to be more harmful than helpful. Stalking is a huge concern with these types of Bluetooth devices. While different trackers have different features, it can be concerning if you discover one has been placed on your person, vehicle, or other personal item and is easily being used to track your where abouts. While some applications, upon download, require you to opt-in to a penalty clause if the device is used for nefarious reasons, there is really nothing stopping a bad guy from putting it on you or hiding it well enough that you may not even know it was being used to track you or an item. Technology abuse is very real and scary. If you notice an unwelcomed device tracking you, your belongings, or you feel unsafe, please go to the police station immediately for assistance.
