Vulnerability. As CMOs, we champion the power of marketing to drive growth, build brands, and develop customer love. But at a previous company, a conversation with our CFO left me…well, frustrated (to say the least). They referred to marketing as a "cost center," implying our efforts don't directly translate to revenue. Look, here's the reality: marketing is an investment, and a powerful one at that. For people that do not understand marketing, demonstrating the ROI requires a data-driven approach that goes beyond vanity metrics. So, how do we bridge this gap? Here's my advice: Speak the Language of ROI: Translate marketing efforts into the language the C-suite understands – revenue growth, customer acquisition cost (CAC), and customer lifetime value (CLTV). Embrace Measurement: Move beyond "awareness" metrics. Track website traffic, lead conversions, and marketing attribution to showcase the tangible impact on sales pipelines. Align with Sales: Marketing and sales are two sides of the same coin. Create open communication and collaboration to ensure messaging is consistent and targeted. By reframing the conversation and showcasing the measurable value marketing brings, we can turn frustration into focus. What are your thoughts, marketing leaders? How do you demonstrate the ROI of your marketing efforts? #MarketingLeadership #ValueofMarketing #BreakingDownSilos >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> I am dedicated to fostering community connections, passionate about lending a helping hand, giving back, and cherishing relationships with family and friends, all while thriving in the dynamic field of marketing. I recently shared with a friend: “I feel like I’m stranded in the basement all alone, and if I open the door 🚪 for a sneak peek 👀 of what’s going on, eager to grow and be part of the team, the door gets shut in my face with a clear message: ‘We don’t want your nose here.’ Tim Parkin hit the nail on the head with building support for marketing leaders. Yes, it can get very lonely. 😔 But is it worth it? We might ask. I believe we must move towards building a supportive community. Tim’s idea is right on point. A marketer can sometimes feel that the only thing they do is execute and follow instructions, when in reality, marketing is the business viewed by the customers. 📊 Stats That Matter -89% of executives agree that marketing is essential to driving customer engagement, yet only 30% see marketing leaders as part of core business strategy. -Companies with marketing integrated into business strategy grow 60% faster and experience 20% higher profitability. Marketing is embedded in the entire business, not just as a promotional tool. When marketing is treated as a silo, it impacts growth and revenue because it’s not integrated as part of the business. This is the biggest mistake big companies make—treating marketing as an afterthought or expense, when in reality it’s the driving force, along with sales, for growth and scalability. Yet, our opinions often don’t matter. And it shouldn’t be that way. 🔹 Last week, I spoke at an event with other manufacturers, and I feel humbled by the impact my session had on them. I shared how Criolite® makes marketing the center of their business and how we helped them grow from a micro-business to a large enterprise. Marketing is a priority for their President, Chef Rosa M. García Flores. I explained how #MarketingOperations and #RevenueOperations are reshaping their market share. They had never heard of this type of integration and its potential. 💡 What Did I Learn? That you know your craft. Your leaders might take you for granted, ignore you, not value you, or not care what you do or don’t do. Perhaps they just care about their own agenda, and your contribution is just a help rather than a key driver for growth and scale. You may feel you’re just an ornament. Instead of feeling defeated, keep joining these groups, keep moving towards people who find your knowledge and expertise so valuable they want to hear more. Yes, being a marketing leader is very lonely. There are days you feel you can’t take it anymore. There are days you feel like quitting. There are days you feel worthless, that you don’t matter, and that you want to give up. But tomorrow, the sun will shine ✨ again with a new opportunity to refocus your attention on where you’re welcomed, appreciated, valued, and where you belong. 💪 Keep pushing! You will get out of this.
