Hiring Java Engineers in 🇮🇳 India vs. the 🇵🇭 Philippines At Plane, we're fortunate to observe many trends in international hiring. Today, I'd like to guide you through the process of hiring #remote Java engineers in two popular countries. 💵 Salaries Let's compare the salaries first. We're using our own proprietary data from US-based companies hiring people remotely. The median salary in 🇮🇳 India is $49,642, while the median in the 🇵🇭 Philippines is $55,749. The top 10% of developers can earn as much as $140,895 in 🇮🇳 India and $158,229 in the 🇵🇭 Philippines. Please keep in mind that this data does not represent the markets for all people in these countries, only those who have access to remote job opportunities in the 🇺🇸 US. You can find links to more detailed reports in the first comments. 🎤 Access to Talent Being a larger country, India has a significantly larger pool of available talent for Java roles. In our dataset, we see that companies hire Java engineers in India twice as often as in the Philippines. This means that you'll likely have an easier time finding more candidates coming from India. 📈 Exchange Rates Unlike some other countries in Latin America, the markups on exchange rates are fairly reasonable in both India and the Philippines. The typical range starts at 1% to 3%, which is not higher than typical rates for international payments. However, even 1% means about $45/month for a typical salary. Thankfully, with Plane, we can alleviate some of this pain and help lower the cost of exchange rates. 📋 FIRC A Foreign Inward Remittance Certificate (FIRC) is a document that acts as proof of foreign transfers to India. Contractors living in India and receiving international payments need to request one, which makes transferring money to India a bit more complex than sending it to the Philippines. 🕒 Time Zones There's not much difference between these two countries. The Philippines is 12 hours ahead of New York compared to 9 hours for India. In both countries, it is popular for local engineers to shift their hours to match US time zones. 🚀I heard today that the minimum wage has now reached £11.44 an hour and with the new Labour government, this will likely be going up soon. 🇬🇧 🇵🇭 So, if someone works from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM or a 45-hour week, that amounts to £2,059 a month. That's a staggering amount of money in other parts of the world. In the Philippines, that is 155,291 PHP a month, which would put you in the top 5% of earners and unlocks some pretty amazing talent.🇵🇭 If you're a hiring manager in the UK trying to hire someone on minimum wage, send me a message.
