We recently asked 1500 people about their experience riding bikes in Sydney as part of our regular active transport survey, first conducted in 2006. You can view the full report here: https://lnkd.in/gsR5Zt_A The results show some strong improvements in rider numbers and their confidence. "The number of people cycling has grown, from 7% of people surveyed riding regularly in 2017 to 19% in 2024," behaviour change coordinator Freya Grove said. "Our new research explains why we've seen that growth too. People riding told us they feel much safer than they used to and that’s hugely important for encouraging people to ride more. 26% of regular riders felt safe in 2017 and that more than doubled to 60% in 2021 and 2024. "That’s not surprising when you consider that since 2017, we have built more cycleways to invite people to ride in Sydney." [Image description: Two people ride bikes on a cycleway in a city. Whether it's World Bike Day, the Tour de France or just a nice sunny day that makes you want to go for a bike ride, we all have a good reason to celebrate cycling. 🚴♀️ Here are a few examples of cycling cities : In the Netherlands 🇳🇱, the cities of Gemeente Utrecht and City of Amsterdam have more than 50% of the population cycle every day. This is made possible by the safe cycle paths and support to cyclists given by Melanie van der Horst and Willem van Heijningen. In Denmark 🇩🇰, the UN City Copenhagen is known for being a very safe city for cyclists. It has a low rate of bicycle theft and promotes car-free days. In addition, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen and her team invest heavily in cycle paths, and many residents continue to cycle even in winter. ❄️ Last but not least, in Canada 🇨🇦, the Ville de Montréal has around 700 km of bike lanes and an award-winning bike-sharing system. In addition, Valérie Plante and her city support cycling with adequate infrastructure and engaged communities. Nowadays, around 2.5% of trips are made by bicycle. #smartcities #sustainability #cycling #bikeshare #infrastructure

At the time of taking this portrait (Oct 23), it was Bruna’s first week on a fixed gear bike and in London. A shared love of bikes led Victor and Bruna to enter into a long-distance relationship after meeting out in Brazil when Victor went back for his holidays and took a bike with him to discover the scene out there. Bruna is an active member of Jaguatiricas - a collective in Curitiba, Brazil that ‘helps give women their freedom too’ through cycling. Predominately a fixed gear community, Bruna stood out to Victor not just because she was riding a mountain bike, but because she was often seen track standing it - suggesting she was a ‘serious’ rider. Whereas for Victor, it was only when he moved to the UK that he got into cycling, quickly becoming curious about people using track bikes aka fixies (a bike with only one gear, where you can’t freewheel and you pedal backwards to brake) “I wanted to understand why people are so hyped for that” He quickly did understand the appeal, even riding over 1000km in one week when he took part remotely in one of the Brazilian ‘Fixie Olympics’ events - where the goal was to cover the greatest distance in a week wherever you were in the world. He came third overall out of several hundred. “I always like a challenge, and challenging myself in trying to go somewhere further. I haven't reached my limit, I believe. Not yet.” This portrait of Bruna and Victor is from my project ‘The Everyday Cyclist’, which aims to disrupt the notion that cycling is only for a certain demographic. Rather, that no matter who you are, there is a cycle and a way of riding out there for you. Everyone can take up space in the cycle lanes. #TheEverydayCyclist #CyclistsofLondon #Cycling #cyclinglife #personalproject

🚲🌍 Muenster: A Model for Promoting Cycling in Urban Areas 🌍🚲 Muenster is an example of promoting cycling in urban areas. The city has developed a detailed and well-planned bicycle infrastructure. This includes 275 km of segregated bike routes and 300 km of agricultural routes. As a result, Muenster is a cyclist-friendly city. One of the notable features is the bicycle station. The station has 3,300 parking spaces, providing a secure place for cyclists to leave their bikes. It also offers repair services and rentals. This improves the cycling experience and encourages more people to ride. Muenster's approach shows the benefits of comprehensive planning. The city integrates cycling facilities with other modes of transport seamlessly. This integration makes it easy for residents to choose cycling as a primary mode of transport, leading to increased cycling rates and a greener environment. In Northeast Wisconsin, the surge in cycling community and infrastructure has been further propelled by organizations like WEBIKE, etc. Through initiatives focused on engineering, education, enforcement, and encouragement, WEBIKE, etc. has been instrumental in promoting walking, bicycling, and overall community health. Alongside the efforts of WEBIKE, etc., the region has witnessed the emergence of more bike lanes, multi-use paths, and community-driven cycling events. These developments not only encourage recreational cycling but also position cycling as a sustainable mode of transportation. Community events such as organized group rides and charity cycling events, often supported by WEBIKE, etc., have played a pivotal role in fostering a sense of camaraderie among cyclists and raising awareness about the benefits of cycling. Moreover, local governments and organizations, in collaboration with WEBIKE, etc., have been proactive in integrating cycling into broader transportation planning efforts. By incorporating bike-friendly features into road designs, implementing bike-sharing programs, and advocating for bicycle-friendly policies, Northeast Wisconsin, with the support of WEBIKE, etc., is creating a conducive environment for cyclists of all levels. This surge in cycling activity reflects a growing commitment to promoting active lifestyles and building healthier, more sustainable communities throughout the region. You can check out episode 10 of “After the Game” where we chat with Peter and Tracy about their amazing adventure riding cross country on a tandem bike, authoring two books “Coast to Coast On A Tandem” & “Bicycling Historic Route 66” about their experiences on the road, and also how their passions for fitness and adventure were passed onto their children. #AftertheGamepodcast #Healthylifestyle #bikesafey #WEBIKE #coasttocoastonatandem #adventureatanyage #adventurejunkies #cyclists #tandembiking #pushingbounderiesandpedals #ridingforcommunity #improvingcyclingforall #historicroute66 #team2 #team2app

We get it - you're driving to work and see someone cycling whiz past you in a bike lane while you're stuck in traffic. "Those darn cyclists, they slow down traffic with all these bike lanes!" It can be hard to see through the weeds when you're the one stuck in traffic but the belief that bike lanes slow down traffic is actually a FALLACY. Studies by Younes et al., 2024, show that bike lanes actually improve overall traffic flow by giving people safe, appealing alternatives to driving. As biking infrastructure expands, people are more likely to choose cycling, especially for shorter trips. This shift—called mode shifting—encourages more people to ride their bikes and frees up more space on the roads for vehicles, alleviating congestion for everyone and reducing commute times. Would you cycle on this street? 🚲🌳 We tend to look to the Netherlands for cycling infrastructure inspo, but did you know that cities in the Netherlands don’t have bike lanes on every street? They’ve created a comprehensive network that prioritizes cyclist safety and convenience. Miami could adapt this strategy by focusing on developing protected bike lanes on main roads, implementing traffic calming measures in residential areas, and creating dedicated bike paths that connect different parts of the city. Given Miami’s warm climate and flat terrain, it has great potential for cycling, but currently lacks the infrastructure to make it safe and appealing. By implementing a mix of dedicated lanes, shared streets, and bicycle highways similar to the Dutch model, Miami could transform into a more cyclist-friendly city! This would not only improve mobility options but also contribute to reducing traffic congestion and promoting a healthier, more sustainable urban environment. 🚲 #miamicycling #cycling #miami

Sri Lanka facing acute mismanagement of public transportation (hampered by drug addicts, poor services, lowsy time tables, insecured late services), and on the top of that bankrupted economy created dire situation where people no longer afford to pay for fuel (I personally spend 2 hours to reach work place nowadays). Maximum utilization of (creating and maintaining) Cycling paths, shady trees in cities, park and ride facilities will do wonders not only for the economy but also for the grand environment. And development of nature friendly tourism segment too. We at least now stop decades old practice of waiting for grand scale investments, instead let’s make home grown solutions until they reach you. https://lnkd.in/e7a6dKeQ
