To add to my comments at the end of the article: any collaboration on making AI worthy of our trust is a good one. But with not a lot of regulation in place yet, introducing hard law will beat soft law. Also, only focussing on most advanced frontier AI (such as large scale generative AI) ignores 95% of AI already in place. According to the press release, the UK and US "intend to perform at least one joint testing exercise on a publicly accessible model". Also what really needs to be avoided is that governments become outsourced testing centers for these providers.

We've been highly critical of the AI Act (https://lnkd.in/gg7uwfHF), and rightly so, but when Aida Ponce Del Castillo asked me to speak for the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) webinar series, I challenged myself with the title 'How can we use the AI Act to defend our rights?' You can watch my talk here where I call out failures but also suggest possible positive approaches to how certain tools within the AI Act could be used in combination with existing legislation to increase protections for people's rights https://lnkd.in/gmsKCfS8
