Speaking in front of a supportive, encouraging crowd helps take the edge off. As the person who has been undertaking a number of the conversations with the various partners we have for Unlock The Future Conference I can safely say that moving the conference to April 2nd is THE BEST DECISION we could have made. Why? I have never seen such engagement from speakers, delegates and sponsors/partners in my entire career and the conversation that has been generated so far has been truly transformative in terms of bringing to the light the huge topics that needs to be addressed at this conference. Some topics that are hot off the press include : Repurposing Space- In the face of declining traditional retail and changes in work habits post-pandemic, there’s a significant need for property managers to rethink how space is utilised to maximise revenue, value and relevance. HOW? Innovative Financial Models- new financial strategies and models that can support sustainable development and make property investments more profitable and risk-resilient. HOW? What does Safe and Secure mean to you?- Delving into technology, legislation existing and new to discuss what safe and secure is going to mean in the coming 12/18 months and beyond. Insights from Norway: Democracy Festival One stop on our journey through southern Norway was Arendal. What first appeared to be a local fair turned out to be a festival of learning for democracy. Since 2012, the harbor town of 45,000 residents has hosted Arendalsuka ("Arendal Week"), a five-day democracy festival. The entire town center was filled with small and large tents. The event features over 1,500 sessions and is co-created by the municipality, political parties, NGOs, universities, and private companies. Admission is free, though most talks are in Norwegian, so difficult to access for foreigners. Norway is known for its safety and peacefulness: Prime Minister Jonas Gahre Støre gave an interview in public, blending in as if he were an ordinary citizen - I was just standing next to him. Everyone in Norway is seen as equal, and there's a strong sense of community, where everyone is expected to contribute to society. Arendalsuka is part of the Democracy Festival Community, meeting the following criteria: - Nationwide or connected to a region, municipality, or city - Open to everyone with free entry - Aimed at participatory democracy and societal benefit - Focused on participation, dialogue, and interaction - Themed around specific topics or target groups - Festival-like in structure and atmosphere What democracy festivals have you attended? #Arendalsuka #CommunityLearning #DemocracyFestival #ParticipatoryDemocracy
