Where do you picture yourself in 2050? Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, Grace Fu, posed this thought-provoking question during the Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards (SEAA) 2024. It certainly challenges us to reflect on our role in achieving Singapore’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050. Singapore Environment Council (SEC) #Sustainability #EnergyTransition #FINNSG

🚨 New buzzword alert: "Transition-Washing" Succeeding "greenwashing" and "green hushing" - “Transition-Washing” has arrived as the latest term to describe misleading corporate sustainability claims. As companies worldwide pledge to transition to net zero, the gap between ambition and action is becoming increasingly apparent. Transition-washing is the new challenge they must tackle. 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗿 𝗯𝗲𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 – 𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 by EcoPolitic An interim #analysis by the European Environment Agency has provided a disappointing assessment of progress toward achieving most of the #EU's #environmental goals. The European Union 8th Environment Action Programme Monitoring #report on progress towards the 8th EAP #objectives 2023 edition contains skeptical forecasts for achieving these goals in the future, according to the Resource and Analysis Center "Society and Environment" on Facebook. (the report #download link: https://lnkd.in/d5hGSfZZ) It is noted that the Agency prepared the report as part of the #monitoring of the #implementation of the 8th EU Environmental Action Program, which will run from May 2022 to 2030. It has six thematic #priorities: ✅ Achieving climate neutrality of the EU; ✅ Strengthening adaptation to climate change; ✅ Transition to renewable green growth (so-called decoupling), including circular economy; Implementation of the ambitious goal of zero pollution; ✅ Protection and preservation of biodiversity; ✅ Reducing the ecological footprint of production and consumption (energy, industry, buildings, transport, etc.). The message said that the #weakest progress was observed in achieving the #goals of increasing: 🔸 absorption of greenhouse gases by carbon sinks; 🔸 energy consumption; 🔸 reuse of materials; 🔸 of organic agriculture and consumption in general (ecological footprint of consumption). The report named among the #best results of progress: 🔹 development of the green products sector; 🔹 eco-innovations; 🔹 expenses for environmental purposes; 🔹 prevention of premature mortality from air pollution. The message added that the EU #environmentalaction program is the main long-term tool for holistic #planning of the bloc's environmental actions since 1973. Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that the #commitments made at the COP28 UAE climate conference are not enough to limit #globalwarming to 1.5°C, even if they are fulfilled. As #EcoPolitic previously reported, the EU will allocate an additional €2.17 #billion from the #revenues from the greenhouse gas emissions (#GHGs) trading system (#EUETS) for #modernization of the #energysystems of 9 #memberstates. On the Emissions Levy, I represented the Institute of Climate and Environmental Governance - Iceg Africa on Citi TV to express our position on the matter. While the levy is a good initiative towards achieving a sustainable environment, we believe there should be deliberate efforts in managing proceeds generated. NB: This is just an excerpt. Just last week, we shared our thoughts on what we hoped to see in Budget 2025. Now, it looks like things are moving in a great direction! Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, has made a bold push to empower the Department of Environment (DOE) to be even more effective in tackling pollution. The DOE might soon get to keep some of the fines it collects, giving them more funds to boost their operations. This could help them improve enforcement and tackle urgent environmental issues more effectively. We're happy to see that stronger policies and actions around sustainability are being considered. Looks like Budget 2025 might bring the sustainability boost we’ve all been hoping for. 👏 Let’s keep the momentum going guys! Now is the time to explore how your business can contribute—whether through carbon credits, biodiversity projects, or renewable energy investments. Let’s stay proactive and be part of this green revolution.
