This year’s theme posed a vital question: “Who will be the next consumer of Australian wine, and how do we attract them?” The Australian wine sector is facing unprecedented challenges. With traditional consumer bases aging and future generations showing different drinking habits, the industry must adapt. Short-term pressures are acute, but the medium and long-term questions are existential for winemakers and grape growers. Over the course of our roadshow, we delved into: - The state of the sector, unpacking the data on emerging consumer trends. - Strategies to attract new generations of wine enthusiasts. - Initiatives from peak bodies Australian Grape & Wine, Wine Australia - Legal considerations for promoting wine to a new audience. 🍷 Launch Date Set for One Grape & Wine Sector Plan 🍇 Australian Grape & Wine and Wine Australia have announced the launch of the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan, set for Friday, 2 August, at the National Wine Centre of Australia. The event will gather representatives from the Australian wine sector, focusing on export and marketing opportunities, research and innovation, regulation and market access, and market insights. Key stakeholders, including exporters, grape growers, wine producers, and marketers, are encouraged to attend this significant industry event. 📊 The centrepiece of the launch is the One Grape & Wine Sector Plan, a strategic initiative aimed at addressing challenges and building a resilient, sustainable future for the grape and wine sector. Developed through extensive consultation with sector stakeholders, the plan outlines strategic priorities and ways to achieve the long-term goals of Vision 2050. The plan aims to align the activities and investments of regional and state associations to refocus collective efforts over the next six years. 🍷 Following the plan’s launch, Wine Australia will provide an update on the current state of the sector, including an Exporter Update and initiatives for 2024-25. Attendees will also have the opportunity to network over lunch, with an invitation to bring a bottle of wine to share. The event, which begins at 10 am ACDT with registration from 9.30 am, is free but requires bookings. New Zealand Wine: A Dynamic Trade Organization in a Dynamic Wine-Producing Nation. New Zealand constitutes one of the world’s most dynamic wine-producing nations. Currently, 2024 production conditions look good. Philip Gregan, CEO of New Zealand Winegrowers, reported: “Since flowering in December, the weather has been close to ideal for grapes. All the reports we are receiving suggest ripening is progressing well and disease pressure is low. With the grapes in excellent condition, it seems we are heading towards another quality New Zealand wine vintage.” There may be, however, a lighter yield this year. “We are expecting some lift in crop volumes in northern regions this year, but nationally we expect the 2024 harvest to be down on the last two years, perhaps significantly so. New wave in the wine industry- prowein24. Running from prowein last week to vineyards around the region this week I have only shared first impressions of the show that finished. Here are some more elaborated points: - Fresh wines are sought for - Whites have already taken over reds - Second gen winemakers in their 30s are on the scene - All of this paves the way for a change in the industry - Climate is a concern - fresh wines do not come from warmer spots - Sustainability is important - but with no sales not so much - Buyer structure is different - Russia is missing fully - Vineyards in cooler spots - a difficult ask With all of this in mind, I have seen a number of producers doubling down on reds, particularly from places where this has been a tradition, such as Spain. Despite that Spain has had the best appearance on the show, in my opinion. p.s. I am somehow thinking we will be blanc de noirs a bit more p.p.s.
