The rising cost of housing has many contributing factors, but one critical issue that's often overlooked is the shortage of skilled tradespeople in the construction industry. 🏠🔧
In recent years, we've seen a significant decline in the number of skilled workers, such as carpenters, electricians, plumbers, and masons. This shortage not only delays construction projects but also drives up labor costs as companies compete for a limited pool of qualified workers. When labor costs rise, these expenses are often passed down to homebuyers, making housing less affordable for many.
Moreover, the lack of skilled trades can lead to lower-quality work, which can result in costly repairs and maintenance down the road, further adding to the financial burden on homeowners.
To address this challenge, we need to:
Promote careers in skilled trades as viable, rewarding options for young people.
Invest in vocational training and apprenticeship programs.
Support policies that encourage the development of a robust skilled workforce.
By taking these steps, we can help ensure a more sustainable and affordable housing market for everyone.
What are your thoughts on the skilled trades shortage and its impact on housing costs?
Let's discuss! 💬
It's a powerful message! Skilled trades are indeed a valuable and rewarding career path that offers long-term growth, stability, and purpose. Sharing it widely can help break down misconceptions and highlight the importance of these professions. Skilled tradespeople are the backbone of many industries, and their expertise is critical to our economy and daily lives.
National Safety Day is crucial for raising awareness about safety measures, fostering a safety culture, and reducing workplace accidents through education and prevention initiatives.
The theme "Focus on Safety Leadership for ESG Excellence" underscores the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into safety practices. It emphasizes the pivotal role of leadership in driving safety initiatives, aligning them with sustainability goals, and fostering a culture that prioritizes safety and responsible corporate citizenship.

Safely walking into the #GlassFocusAwards24:
Pilkington UK have been nominated for the Health and Safety Action Award at the #GlassFocusAwards24, for the introduction of Safety Walk & Talk to our GEMBA walks throughout our Pilkington UK sites.
Key parts of the Pilkington UK Safety Walk and Talk Process:
- The management team select a specific activity to observe during their Safety Walk & Talk.
- They then look at the behaviours of the team, ask the Team Leader what they see, and if they are satisfied with the behaviours being demonstrated.
- If something appears unsafe they question the Team Leader on their opinions and highlight what/where the unsafe behaviour is.
- Taking this time to step back and reassess activities for safety allows our teams to continually spot improvements and keep safety front of mind.
Please join us in wishing the Health and Safety Team good luck for the awards night in November!

"I am pleased to share that I attended the NEBOSH online conference on Creating a Safety Culture. This insightful event provided a deep understanding of how to establish and sustain safety excellence in organizations. Some of the key lessons I gained include:
Leadership’s Role in Safety: How effective leadership drives the adoption and success of safety practices.
Employee Engagement: Techniques to enhance employee involvement in safety initiatives, fostering ownership and compliance.
Embedding Safety in Culture: Strategies to integrate safety as a core organizational value rather than a compliance requirement.
Continuous Improvement: The importance of regular evaluations and updates to safety protocols to meet evolving challenges.
Communication and Awareness: Methods to effectively communicate safety goals and ensure awareness at all organizational levels.
This conference has enriched my approach to safety management, and I look forward to implementing these practices to contribute to safer workplaces. I am also proud to have earned the Certificate of Attendance, marking my commitment to advancing safety excellence."

The recent ISG collapse has rocked the construction world, and it’s a timely reminder that preparation is everything.
The key takeaways?
🔑 Strengthen credit terms
🔑 Reassess credit exposure
🔑 Act fast on collections — don’t wait for things to get worse.
Bottom line? It’s going to get messy. But with the right moves, we can stay ahead.
