TOPPLING OF I-GIRDERS IN SOUTH KOREA
It was 4.28 pm on 30th April 2024, when all nine girders of a span broken and toppled down one after another in SIHEUNG, GYEONGGI, SOUTH KOREA, which is the highest number in the history of toppling. As per posted video, 9th girder broken and came down due to tilting outside. Once it broken, it swung and hit 8th girder which tilted towards 7th girder. Then after, all girders except 1st girder hit their adjacent girder and finally all nine girders broken and toppled within 10 seconds.
It was a miracle when two workers saved by no other than God.
What was the reason for tilting of 9th girders can only be guessed. It may be due to bearing issue or some object was there of pedestal for tilting of 9th I-girder.
Once 9th girder started tilting, loosening/ lowering should have stopped and reasons must have found out to avoid this major incidence.
Side supports seen in the video are not adequate otherwise, only 9th girders could be toppled and 8 would be intact.
Wherever, toppling happens, in-adequate support is found to be one of the reasons.
Sequence can be understood with attached pictorial view.
One can understand the pain of bridge engineers, so please don’t save money during providing side supports which may cost more if toppled.
SAFETY FIRST PLEASE

3moIt's nice to see that OKK is still running! I think I swapped out the drawbar Belleville washers on that mill, bulletproof machine.
