FERNRIDE’s safety & security concept for our autonomous terminal tractors has successfully passed the rigorous external evaluation conducted by TÜV SÜD, a renowned international testing and certification body. A huge shoutout to the whole team for pioneering this complex and important topic toward the Machinery Directive compliance, and, finally, CE, which is essential for enabling scaling in the EU! Super proud of us!!! 🫶 💯 🚀 🔍 What does this mean? The in-depth assessment covered hazard analyses, safety concept specifications, and validation plans, all of which highlight the robustness of our safety concept - the first of its kind in the EU. With this positive outcome, we’re now preparing for our first driverless tests, without a safety driver in the cabin,—scheduled to begin in December 2024. 🚛✨ 🌍 The EU is known for its high safety standards, and we’re proud to be the pioneering company pushing forward in such a complex regulatory environment. Achieving compliance in the EU is no small feat, and many hesitate to enter due to the complexity. I have concerns with surrounding the approach autonomous is being sold to our industry… Aurora Innovation's white paper claims that autonomous trucks can improve efficiency by 32% through several mechanisms: optimizing highway speeds to reduce fuel consumption by 9-17% (cruise control and a well trained driver can nail this right off the bat), limiting idling which currently accounts for 4-9% of fuel use (I’ll give you that for one gallon an hour), and employing eco-driving techniques to strategically optimize acceleration, braking, and coasting for a potential 9.5% fuel saving (which new automated transmissions already do). They also claim true autonomous trucks can reduce traffic congestion but one mention that can’t be overlooked is about deadhead miles. Deadhead miles will be there with or without human drivers. They are using generic information that can be somewhat debunked with real understanding of the industry in which many times their investors don’t have. Sometimes I feel these are irresponsible ways of securing more investment dollars. Especially with a claim of over 30% more efficiency on a diesel tractor. A human driver isn’t 32% less efficient than what the machine is designed to be. A poorly trained one, slightly but overall autonomous companies are swinging for the fences in their approach to win over the motoring public’s confidence. https://lnkd.in/exSvHs-G
