In the mid 1980's I worked in a converted factory in the North of England. The furnace that powered the old steam driven engine was long gone but the chimney still towered above us, a familiar and common landmark of many pre-war Northern industrial towns. Once a year, contractor Fred was hired to climb halfway up the inside of the chimney and clean the 'blinds'. Fred was a quiet, unassuming fellow who went about his business with a wry smile and drove a Bentley. Fred was the only 'blind' cleaner left in the area and so could 'write his own paycheck'. One day, as Fred was loading up his tools into the back of the Bentley, I asked him "what are those 'blinds' for and why do you clean them every year?" "Well I can tell you what the 'blinds' are for" Fred explained, "back in WW2 this mill made parts for tanks and planes. These 'blinds' were installed so the German bombers couldn't see the glow from the furnace". "As for why your company pays me a kings ransom each year to clean them . . . well that I can't fathom". I watched Fred's Bentley pull away, wry smile still visible in the rear view mirror. Hence, the most expensive 6 words in business - 'we've always done it that way'. Break the cycle. Try FRAMEQUEST. These are exciting times at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT): we are in the final days of the applications phase for the Fiscal Year 2024 CDOT Innovations Challenge (the state's fiscal year (FY) ends on June 30). Here on LinkedIn, we are starting up a series to feature some of the many dozens of wonderful applicants in this year's challenge -- and, I invite you to borrow these, to help improve #effectiveness and #efficiency in your own organization! Today we are featuring the "Guardrail Wood Post Puller" improvement, developed and implemented by Daryl Yost, a #highway #maintenance patrol crew member in CDOT's Southwest Colorado Region (aka "Region 5"). This innovation uses a clevis bracket mounted to a plate, that helps attach to wooden posts on our #highways which need to be removed and replaced. This innovation make that job #safer and more #efficient than the previous method.
