✨🥖 Celebrating collaboration across the European bakery sector! Yesterday, representatives from the Fedima Board and Secretariat joined the traditional Bread Initiative end-of-year event hosted by our partner AIBI - aisbl International Association of Plant Bakers in the beautiful Grand Place, right in the heart of Brussels. During the opening symposium, Olivier Schenk, newly elected Member of the European Parliament, emphasised the importance of fostering dialogue and collaboration with all stakeholders, while DG Agri Deputy Director General Pierre Bascou provided early insights into the upcoming EU Agri-Food Strategy, which aims at supporting the entire supply chain and will focus on enhancing competitiveness while ensuring social and environmental sustainability. As Thomas Lesaffre reminded us, our voice is strongest when we raise it together. That's why these gatherings are so important in uniting the European baking community, key partners, and policymakers to strengthen connections and discuss shared priorities. To another year of successful collaboration! 🤝🌟 #BakeryIndustry #Collaboration #BreadInitiative #EuropeanBaking Discover more about the Bread Initiative and our common asks to EU policymakers in the vision paper "Keeping Bread on the Table"👉 https://lnkd.in/d8d-5Wcj

✨ 2 days exchanging on the effects of the 🌳EUDR in ☕coffee supply chains ✨ This week, CBI - Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing countries brought together #alumni from previous #coffee programmes in in a warm and sunny Copenhagen to exchange on the topic of the🌳EU Deforestation Regulation #EUDR. 💬 An impressive line-up of speakers, representing different parts of coffee supply chains, shared the effects of the EUDR from their perspectives - in person or in a hybrid setting. 😊 It was an absolute pleasure to moderate the event! To me, having analyzed and worked with the EUDR in the past year, it was very interesting to listen to the different actors and their approaches. 💫 And from the active participation of the participants, I was clearly not the only one – there is a sense of urgency and a need for input and insights in order to know how best to move forward. And while there were differences, some conclusions can be drawn based on the discussions: ⁉There are more questions than answers at this point. EUDR is happening, but lots still need to be clarified. ✅ Certification is not a green lane, but it can be part of the solution. 🤝 Partnerships and cooperation in the value chains becomes increasingly important. 🎉 A big shout out to the people behind the programme and organization of this event Fred Janssen Rafael Valcarce Patrick Gouka and Jerike Waterhout, and of course to all the speakers. And a huge thank you to the participants for making this the interactive and engaging event it was 📷 Photos: Group picture on the sunny terrace right outside our conference room; Gustavo Ferro interacting with the room in one of the successful online presentations; and coffee tasting at the The Coffee Roasting Company Ltd. #EUDR #coffee #EuropeanGreenDeal #weeklychallengeaccepted

Reflecting on the RMI Analytics GmbH Conference in Rome 2024 The RMI Conference in Rome, has been a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with industry colleagues and friends, especially Gary Bull. It was Gary who brought me to the SABMiller family back in 2003, a move that has been pivotal in my career. Fast forward +20 years, and it’s incredible to see how much we still have in common. The conference provided some new insights, especially concerning the future of the beer industry and sustainable practices in raw material sourcing. Here are some key takeaways: - Reorientation of the Beer Category: We’re witnessing a shift in the beer industry. Developing markets show growth potential, whereas mature markets are continue to shift towards premium and alcohol-free offerings, despite an overall market decline. The legalization of cannabis could further impact beer consumption. - Sustainable and Regenerative Barley Growing: A hot topic was how to accelerate sustainable and regenerative practices in barley cultivation. While all major groups have initiated programs, a unified approach is yet to be seen. - Malt Industry Consolidation: The malt industry has seen significant consolidation, with major groups like Boortmalt & Soufflet Group emerging. However, the journey doesn’t end here. Beyond regional expansion, the focus seems to be on further consolidation and reducing carbon footprints. Thanks Brent Atthill, Danielle Bekker & Jeff Grajewski! Let’s continue the conversation and explore how these developments can shape our strategies and operations. #RMIConference #BeerIndustry #Sustainability #Networking

Now that the #righttofood seems to be receiving more attention in Europe, it could be the right time to re-read some blog entries that I co-wrote with Tomaso Ferrando on the importance to enact that human right in the EU member states legal frameworks, as well as at European level. LET'S TALK ABOUT THE RIGHT TO FOOD https://lnkd.in/di8nBgcE Just recently, we have seen three political moves to re-position the right to food at European level (see below). And this year's #WorldFoodDay will be celebrating the #righttofoods. So, a new boost to the human right to food at global and European level. 1.- Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Resolution 2577 (3 October 2024). Guaranteeing the human right to food. https://lnkd.in/ddMxFfHs 2.- European Economic and Social Committee Opinion, NAT/925-EESC-2024. 🙌 Only three more days until the EU #OpenFoodConference in Leuven starts! Looking forward to having fruitful conversations about the future of food policy! As we at Agora Agrar are currently writing a study about the role of the land use sector and food systems in a climate neutral Europe, I am particularly curious to exchange about EU food policy, such as: - 🥗 Policies to strengthen fair #foodenvironments – from #publicprocurement to regulating the #marketing environment and #labelling - ⚖ the future of the needed legislative framework for #sustainable #foodsystems (#SFSLaw) - 💶 #Social policies to reduce #foodpoverty - 🌱 Protein diversification strategies and the role of alternative proteins (#AltPro) - 🗑 #FoodWaste Reduction strategies, including better monitoring, strategies to reduce #foodloss at farm level and possible ways to (re-)allow safe use of catering waste as feed for animals. 🇩🇪 I am also happy to share insights about the progress and processes within food policy in #Germany. The past months have been very dynamic 🎉 ! Here some highlights: - 📃 The German government has published the federal #foodstrategy, - 🥕German nutrition guidelines #FBDG were updated by @DGE – based on a mathematical model and for the first time including environmental considerations in the calculation, - 🏛️ the publication of very progressive results of the first citizen council (#Bürgerrat Ernährung) that was put in place by the German Parliament and summarized key requirements to develop food policy, - 👨👨👦 🏘 progress to put food policy on the local agenda, - 🥜 start of a 38 Mio Euro program to diversify protein supply and support alternative proteins. 💬 💡 Last but not least: I am very curious to learn what food policies and instruments are currently debated in other countries (particularly Central and Eastern Europe). https://lnkd.in/dXdWCN6s Alexandra Nikolakopoulou John Bell Sergi Corbalán Alex Holst Erik Mathijs Pierre-Marie Aubert Isabel Paliotta Anja Katalin De Cunto Fabian Richter Marina Schmidt 🍎🍏 Zoe Heuschkel Anna Wissmann Stefanie Vandevijvere Peter Defranceschi Thomas Legge Pete Ritchie Christian Reynolds Madeleine Coste Peter Sousa Hoejskov Orsolya Diófási-Kovács, Phd Eva Blaho Fabrice DeClerck Hannah Nohlen Dirk Jacobs Cortney Price Anna Handschuh Alba Gil Camille PERRIN Charlie Brocard Andreas Thurner European Alliance for Plant-based Foods Caroline Amrom Martin Bowman Nikolai Pushkarev Nusa Urbancic Nathalie Bolduc Jessica Duncan Michael Minter Ben Reynolds

The creativity, innovation and constant strive for improvement that characterises the European #brewing sector had made our continent a leading #beer-producing region. Currently, the brewing sector accounts for: 🍻 10 000 breweries 💶 €40 billion in government revenues 💼 over 2 million jobs The last few years have however been particularly challenging for the brewing sector, evidencing how intertwined beer is with European society and the economy. This also shows how strong support is crucial to ensure the industry can continue to be a leading contributor to European social, economic, and sustainable development. Therefore, ahead of the new EU political mandate, we urge policymakers to maintain Europe's leadership in #beer production by removing unnecessary bureaucratic burdens, cultivating a robust industrial policy that supports brewers in the twin transition. Decision makers should also broaden the dialogue on the future of EU agriculture to include the entire agri-food chain, thereby recognising beer and its raw ingredients as strategic products for a competitive and sustainable EU agricultural policy.
