LET US TALK ABOUT THE MANGO FARMING In an agronomical perspective, preparing land for mango cultivation requires meticulous attention to soil quality, drainage, and planting techniques. Deep ploughing followed by levelling ensures proper soil structure and facilitates water distribution. The land should ideally have a mild slope to prevent waterlogging. Digging holes of appropriate dimensions, such as 2 feet by 2 feet, is crucial for young plants to establish deep root systems. Proper spacing between mango trees is essential, with variations depending on factors like soil fertility and rainfall. Mulch sheets, also known as mulch films, are thin layers of material spread over the soil surface in agricultural and gardening settings. These sheets are primarily used to improve growing conditions for crops by providing a range of benefits. They are significantly transforming modern agriculture through various beneficial impacts. These sheets help suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight, which reduces the need for herbicides and manual weeding, leading to healthier crops and lower labor costs. Additionally, they aid in moisture retention by reducing evaporation from the soil surface, which is especially advantageous in arid regions or during dry seasons, resulting in more efficient water use and potentially higher crop yields. Mulch sheets also regulate soil temperature, keeping the soil warmer during cool periods and cooler during hot periods, thus extending growing seasons and improving germination and root development. Furthermore, mulch sheets improve crop quality by preventing direct contact between fruits and vegetables and the soil, reducing the risk of soil-borne diseases, and enhancing marketability. Study the market carefully and adjust production accordingly. 🔷System: Decide which system you will use. Will it be open or protected? 🔷Layout: After deciding on the range of crops to be grown and the systems, the layout of the land must be planned. Here, care is needed. If the layout is bad, changing it would be costly. Remember too that roads, irrigation pipelines or buildings are involved. If sited wrongly, it would cost you an arm and a leg to move them. 🔷Cropping plan: Work out the rotational plan to be followed and details of cropping. This should be done early enough. Land preparation: The cost of clearing and preparing land must be considered. 🔷Labour needs: It is very important to plan for labour, especially when manual work is needed. 🔷Fencing and windbreaks: If fencing or wind break is needed, decide on the type and material as well as placement. 🔷Compost area: Decide on the location of the compost area and whether you will need a compost heap or pit. A compost heap/pit is necessary to provide a place for the disposal of organic debris. It also serves as a source of organic matter for use in the farm. It is generally located close to the nursery in an area unsuitable for crop production. 🔷Nursery siting/area: Lightly shaded areas are preferred or you may build a lath house. Preferably, the nursery area should be at most two per cent of the total land. You would also need to decide on the type of nursery to use. Will it be a seedbed or containerised? If seedbed, will it be raised, flat or sunken? 🔷Irrigation and distribution method: Decide whether irrigation will be needed. If yes, carefully choose the system and water source. With the ultimate goal of establishing farmer-owned enterprises, the Farmer Production Cluster (FPC) project is benefiting smallholder farmers (SHFs) by providing easier access to modern technologies, machinery, agricultural inputs, and advisory services to increase production and productivity. Moreover, the FPC project plays an important role in the faster diffusion of research recommendations and innovations that propel the agriculture sector by leaps and bounds. Last week, we highlighted some of the project activities on the Grain FPC. This week, we will shed light on the Horticulture FPC. 🥑Horticulture FPC The horticulture FPC targets five horticultural priority crops: avocado, banana, mango, tomato, and onion. In 2015 EFY, a total of 72,700 smallholder farmers, organized into 1266 clusters, covered 14,500 hectares of land with a total of 1.5 million fruit seedlings. They produced 6.7 million quintals of market surplus and sold around 5.8 million quintals, with a value of ETB 10.7 billion. Notably, about 382 quintals of avocado have also been exported. In 2015/2016 EFY, a total of 97,000 smallholder farmers, organized into 1566 clusters, covered 21,100 hectares of land with a total of 12 million fruit seedlings. So far, 7,864,082 million quintals of market surplus sold, of which 86% was sold.
