Did you know that you have approximately 6-8 seconds to impress a recruiter with your CV before they skip to the next one? Yesterday was the last session in the Lawrit Journal of Law legal research and writing boot camp. It concluded two weeks of learning, insights and valuable resources critical for a law student. We had another session on CV optimisation led by Mary Agaba , the co-founder of CareerEx Consulting . She gave valuable tips on how to properly craft an attractive CV. Here are some pointers: 1) Use a consistent font and have a clear structure. 2) The STAR approach can also be used in writing your CV. 3) When writing your experience, use bullet points. 4) Only use a maximum of five bullet points for each work experience. 3) Make use of metrics/numbers. 4) Your CV should not be more than 2 pages. I'm excited to mark the end of my journey on Lawrit Journal of Law . I'm beyond grateful for the new things I learnt and I can't wait to apply them.

I've took the time to create a short presentation on how to optimise your law costs CV. In the last few weeks, I've been the most active in the law costs market I have ever been. I currently have interviews with 10+ roles on the market which I'm hoping to fill most of (if not all) within the next couple of weeks. In that time, I've had some of the most interesting and insightful conversations with both candidates and clients of the highest level, within the Law Costs sector. After receiving an abundance of CV's, I felt this short presentation may help with those who are struggling to add depth to their CV's. In sum, I find that clients respond best to CV's that fully detail all the duties within the candidates roles, both current and past. Detail all case types worked, no matter to what level and lastly that detail the numbers surrounding billings, invoicing, budgets etc. Hopefully this is helpful for one or two who may be struggling to find a role or who are unsure where to start with creating a CV. Some common reasons why students/graduates don't get their CV/application forms reviewed (reasons told to me by my clients); 1. It's too expensive, 2. It is not needed, why have my CV reviewed when I can do it myself?, 3. What is the point of having my CV reviewed because I hardly have any work experience?, My responses to the above; 1. Firstly, the price associated with reviewing a CV is tiny when compared with other professional services out there. Our rate for reviewing a CV for example is £25 and that includes a mark-up and re-drafting service so it is cheaper than a meal out! 2. Secondly, you can use that logic on every professional service out there. Why seek a doctor when you can create medicines yourself? Why seek out a lawyer for legal advice when you can read legislation yourself? Why have a barber cut your hair when you can cut your hair yourself? The reason why (hopefully!) you don't do any of the aforementioned services is because you are not trained or specialised in that particular service. Therefore, it would make sense for you to speak to experts. Just as it takes 5 years on average to qualify as a doctor. In a similar fashion, CV reviewing is a professional service which takes years of experience to perfect and as such, it would be worthwhile if you seek out an expert such as ourselves for your CV reviewing needs. 3. Sometimes your CV is often not presented in the best way to highlight any relevant work experience. For example, you may be applying for a legal role with no legal work experience. However, you may have transferable skills from working in retail which you have failed to highlight in your CV. Ultimately, it is these transferable skills that you want to highlight in your CV and we can do that!
