"In the Cloud" != "Cloud Native" Point proven... A few months ago, I was intrigued by Adam Bien's talk on this topic. Adam gave an entertaining presentation at the #digitalcraftsday2024 in Weiden, where he stressed the differences between the two concepts. The distinction became much clearer to me, but it finally sank in last week as we were struggling with connection timeouts from AWS Lambdas to an RDS Database. An RDS database may seem cloud native at first glance, but it is not! Yes, it is managed by AWS and can be created with only a few clicks, but that does not make it a cloud native technology. Why? Because, you are still responsible yourself for configuring, establishing, and managing connections to the database. DynamoDB is a totally different story. It is one of Amazon's unique selling propositions. As such it is in AWS's best interest that connections are easy to configure, reliable, and fit seamlessly into their own ecosystem. A managed Postgres, on the other hand, is still a Postgres. My point is NOT to compare the capabilities of the two. My point is that as a Software Architect, you achieve something way more important than a somewhat less expensive or slightly faster technology: Using cloud native solutions, you outsource the responsibility not only to operate the underlying technology, but also to provide a convenient interface. During our Berlin Summit in May this year, Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a major €7.8 billion investment to build the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany by 2040, with its first Region located in the State of Brandenburg and available to all customers by the end of 2025.
