Among the books I’ve authored, one that reflects a deeply strategic focus is ‘Sudan’s Vision for the Promotion of Regional Integration and Security.’ This work encapsulates my experiences with IGAD and my reflections on Sudan’s regional role in shaping cooperation, peace, and development. The idea for this book emerged from my time as Foreign Minister of Sudan and Chairman of the IGAD Council of Ministers. It offers insights into Sudan’s vision for fostering unity, integration, and stability among member states, while addressing the region's historical challenges and modern realities. Throughout the book, I take readers on a journey across six key themes: •          The first chapter situates IGAD within the global and regional context, explaining the philosophy behind international organizations and their relevance to the Horn of Africa. •          The second chapter outlines the goals, structure, and evolution of IGAD, covering significant milestones up to the Khartoum Summits. •          The third chapter explores the geographical and demographic makeup of the region, delving into the dynamics between member states. •          The fourth chapter discusses both the positive and negative factors influencing regional integration and security, highlighting key opportunities and challenges. •          The fifth chapter examines Western perceptions of the Horn of Africa, focusing on U.S. initiatives such as the Greater Horn of Africa Conference and their implications for regional cooperation. •          The sixth and final chapter presents Sudan’s forward-looking vision for revitalizing IGAD, fostering strategic economic, political, and social ties among member states to ensure stability and security. This book aims to inspire leaders, scholars, and policymakers to embrace a new model of regional collaboration—one that moves beyond the legacies of division and conflict, ushering in an era of trust and shared prosperity. Through this work, I invite readers to explore how Sudan and the region can navigate today’s global challenges by breaking the cycle of doubt and mistrust. Together, let us build a future where integration and security become the pillars of unity, allowing our nations and peoples to thrive." I am excited to share that USAID’s Digital Ecosystem Country Assessment (DECA) report for #Armenia, which I co-authored with Meri Sheroyan, Gevorg Minasyan, and Chloe Carrington, has been published! The DECA was an immensely interesting and important project for me as I focused on one of its three pillars. For this report, I address Armenia’s digital infrastructure landscape and digital infrastructure governance, including geographic network coverage, network performance, internet bandwidth, and spectrum allocation as well as dynamics around security, interoperability, and competitiveness. I further examine behavioral, social, and physical barriers and opportunities for equitable adoption of services, such as digital divides, affordability, and digital literacy. My research also addresses the current landscape in cybersecurity governance in Armenia and the anticipated reforms therein. The report and its three pillars provide recommendations for the government of Armenia, our partner governments, and the international development community, aiming to maximize Armenia’s opportunities for sustainable digital development. It is an important read for those interested in Armenia, the Caucasus, and all things tech.

Rwanda to Host First ICANN Meeting in East Africa

Recently, I participated in the #SummitOfTheFuture: Nigerian Civil Society Consultative Forum on the Global Digital Compact, convened by the United Nations Nigeria (@un_nigeria) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Innovation (@fmocde), @wideflive, and the International Center for Investigative Reporting (ICIR) (@icirnigeria). This multi-stakeholder forum assembled a diverse coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to conduct a comprehensive review of the draft Global Digital Compact and articulate Nigeria's position on this pivotal international framework. The consultative process addressed several critical domains, with particular emphasis on digital rights and privacy. Discussions underscored the imperative of safeguarding digital rights and enhancing privacy protections, especially in light of the proliferation of digital surveillance mechanisms and data collection practices. My primary focus during this event was on digital inclusion through educational systems. I advocated for the co-creation and co-design of policies with grassroots stakeholders, ensuring their full participation and representation. Furthermore, I emphasized the criticality of prioritizing digital literacy within the current national curriculum. This approach aims to bridge the digital divide and ensure equitable access to digital resources across all demographic segments of Nigerian society, with particular attention to marginalized and underserved communities. The forum culminated in the formulation of a set of policy recommendations, which will be submitted to the Federal Ministry of Communication and Digital Innovation and the United Nations Nigeria for further consideration and potential integration into national and international digital governance frameworks. #Dbegotin #SummitOfTheFuture #DigitalEducation #SDGs #goal2030

For the second consecutive year, I was among five professional judges in the MENA region for Digital Innovation for Peace Funded by the EU, and implemented by Leaders International, DW Akademie, and Elbiro Media, Digital Innovations for Peace (#DIP) aims to foster social resilience in the #MENA region against the growing threat of #disinformation and to promote peace in the digital sphere in Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Algeria, and Tunisia. DIP seeks to establish a cross-regional online community for networking and capacity building among media professionals, digital technology activists, and creative entrepreneurs. By encouraging the creation of cutting-edge ICT solutions, DIP achieves the goal of improving media and information literacy (#MIL) and media users' resistance to disinformation. Entrepreneurs, media professionals, and ICT experts from the Middle East and North Africa (#MENA) region were invited to join the second DIP Crowdsourcing competition. More than 27 Participants of the crowdsourcing competition were involved in a 3-week online training program that aimed to improve their skills and encourage them to develop #digitalmedia ideas that tackle #disinformation, #fakenews, and #hatespeech or strengthen #media literacy in the region.
