Really intriguing report (thredUP_2023_Resale_Report) from one of the biggest thrifting platforms in the world, (ThredUp). It's truly astonishing to witness the shift in consumer behavior towards secondhand items. Here are the top 3 consumer data points from the report: 1) 75% of consumers have either shopped for or are open to shopping for secondhand apparel. 2) 83% of Gen Z has either shopped for or is open to shopping for secondhand apparel. 3) 1 in 3 apparel items bought in the last 12 months was secondhand. Consumer trends consistently signal significant business opportunities, and online resale or recommerce presents a substantial opportunity for fashion brands. In fact, online resale is the fastest-growing sector in the U.S. secondhand market. Some noteworthy data from the report includes: 1) Resale is driving the growth of the secondhand market, expected to reach a $57 billion market in the next 10 years, growing faster than any other fashion market (from 3% to 18%). 2) U.S. consumers bought secondhand apparel items in 2022 that they would have normally purchased new, marking a 40% increase from 2021. 3) Fashion faces an overproduction problem, with over 100 billion garments produced globally each year for a population of 8 billion. 4) Retailers with branded resale programs skyrocketed in 2022, with 86% of retail executives reporting that their customers are already participating in resale, up 8 percentage points from 2021. 5) Over half of Gen Z is more likely to shop with a brand that offers secondhand alongside new items, showing a 6-point increase from 2021. Thrifting is not a new trend (Vinted is already 15 years old), but it's evolving into the new normal for younger generations, while fast fashion is projected to remain steady in the coming years. Many brands, especially in the U.S., are effectively managing their secondhand offerings through recommerce channels. This trend is also rapidly gaining momentum in Europe, and at iF returns , we're here to help. #SustainableFashion #SecondhandRevolution

Evri's latest report, marking its 50th anniversary, highlights the evolution of UK fashion and retail over the past five decades, noting how trends have reflected societal changes, from the bohemian styles of the 1970s to today's sustainable and cyclical fashion choices. The report reveals that fashion and footwear remain key spending priorities despite rising living costs, with price, vouchers, word of mouth, and social media as top influences on purchasing decisions. It also highlights changing shopping habits, with Brits frequently visiting high streets and shopping online, often using stores to try before buying online, and returning a notable portion of online purchases. https://lnkd.in/ee-vk5rF

Fashion spending in the UK has continued to decline from its post-pandemic peak in 2021, with shoppers more likely to be updating outfits with accessories than investing in new clothes. The £21.7bn spend is dominated by womenswear, which accounts for around half of the annual spend. Customers are buying both online and instore, with the share of offline purchasing continuing to increase as the offline/online balance has normalised after the pandemic.
