There's a post that's gone viral on some other platforms about how a factory in Pennsylvania has responded to the tariffs that are likely to go into effect next year. While I can't verify whether it's real or not, I can give you my own experiences. In 2018, there was a tariff that raised the prices of imported steel by 25% and aluminum by 10%. Leadership at the company I was working for at the time informed us that all of our suppliers were American, but that they had also raised their prices by nearly as much due to the decrease in pressure from foreign competitors. In 2020, the company I was working for was buying a lot of our electronic components from China, because that's the only country where they were made. COVID-related supply chain issues were at their worst, causing a lack of availability and unpredictable price increases, which had caused us some headaches. There was discussion within the company that they were preparing for the possibility that a tariff could also be placed on these components, further exascerbating the problem.

💡 Did you know that tariffs can quietly erode your profit margins? 👇 🏗 For manufacturers, tariffs aren’t just a line item—they can shrink profit margins by 2-5% on average. That might not seem like much, but over time, it can translate to tens of thousands of dollars lost per contract. 🌍 Here’s a real-world example: A Procurement Manager in Metal Components saved $7,000 on their next contract quote by using a tariff management tool. It only took them 15 minutes to implement, but the results were immediate and impactful. 🔍 What this shows us: Tariffs, if unmanaged, can become a silent profit killer. A small percentage can ripple through your supply chain, compounding losses with every purchase order. 🚀 What can you do? Proactively review tariff impacts on key suppliers. Invest in tools that streamline tariff tracking and analysis. Engage stakeholders early to forecast and budget for tariff-related costs. Procurement is no longer about just buying—it’s about managing complexity to protect profitability. What strategies have worked for you when facing tariff challenges? Learn how building safety stock and focusing on high-margin products can help you navigate uncertain times. Have you purchased goods recently (or are planning to shortly) because of possible tariff and price increases in January? Do you have family or friends who are rushing to buy their clothing, electronics, cars, furniture, and building supplies as well? It kind of makes you wonder if we will see a surge in purchasing by people looking to beat the tariffs, followed by a "bottoming out" of the economy as many folks pull back on spending because they have stockpiled their purchases for the year. Think about how this will impact ocean and air freight costs as we first see maximum demand followed by a sharp drop in bookings. Remember when we all thought the COVID logistics nightmare was a "once in a lifetime" event? I'm starting to wonder what 2025 freight rates and space will look like. I'm starting to wonder if I should start tracking toilet paper prices and availability as an economic barometer...
