Merger and acquisition (M&A) should not be considered an essential strategy for Ethiopian banks at this time. Instead, the country benefits from having a diverse range of banks: small, mid-sized, and large, across its financial landscape. Before moving forward with M&A out of concern 😀over foreign banks entering the Ethiopian financial sector, it’s essential to carefully consider the specific financial goals your bank aims to achieve, the level of your local market understanding and customer base. https://lnkd.in/euuk4q4s

Mergers of Banks This has become talk of the town for last few weeks. Already a news was published yesterday that a merger is eminent. Lots of news have been published on pros and cons of merger. Fixed cost and operational cost savings might be achieved since one branch will exist instead of two branches in same location, one head office, one core banking software, reduction of human resource cost, etc. We need to keep in mind about rise of unemployment. Good governance, if exist, in the good one to be merged might enhance the lack of governance in the weaker one as there will be one BOD. Valuation of shares of weak bank and share exchange ratio determination must be carefully handled by both BB and BSEC. How NPL will be monitored and be reduced will play a critical role to make such a scheme successful in future. Nevertheless, do you think without ensuring accountibility and establishing governance in banking sector, this merger alone can improve the system? Please do share your thoughts in this regard.

UBS CEO Sergio Ermotti has emphasized that the integration of Credit Suisse into UBS is "a marathon, not a sprint." This statement comes as UBS, twice the size of Credit Suisse in terms of assets, begins the significant task of merging with its struggling rival. The deal, valued at around $3 billion, marks a monumental step in combining Switzerland's two largest banks. 2024 is a pivotal year for this banking giant as it navigates the complexities of this merger. While economic aggregation concentrates capital in larger clusters, saving jobs and clients’ savings are definite benefits to such deals. A deal of this nature and stature makes us realise how tough things still are economically in most parts of the world and that we still have some way to go before the expected economic upturn arrives. The phrase “it’s a marathon, not a sprint” is often used to remind us that big achievements require long-term effort. But to truly grasp this analogy, one might argue that you need to experience running a marathon yourself.

"Targeting mergers and acquisitions (M&As) is an especially misguided approach to addressing concerns about banking-sector competition and stability. The long-term consequences of these proposals will ultimately affect consumers. M&As allow larger, well-capitalized banks to acquire weaker banks. This strengthens the system’s stability by merging weaker banks with stable ones. Especially in economic downturns, adding more uncertainty and time to this process will leave the entire financial system more vulnerable to individual bank failures." https://lnkd.in/eRXekDiD
