Visiting the countries where you're expanding your business is key to building meaningful connections and understanding the local market. At Canada StartHub we have been expanding our strategies to connect with international entrepreneurs across various countries, and I had the pleasure of being part of this entrepreneurial mission organized by the BCCC Brazil-Canada Chamber of Commerce and ACATE - Associação Catarinense de Tecnologia (Catarinense Technology Association) in Brazil for the Startup Summit in Florianopolis/ SC. During this incredible event, I had the opportunity to meet with Brazilian leaders and entrepreneurs, and to strengthen partnerships across the innovation ecosystem. One of the highlights was being interviewed by Peter Hawkins, Co-chair of the BCCC, who I admire as a leader and who has been an incredible advocate for more business exchange between the two countries. We had the chance to discuss the challenges and opportunities global leaders face when expanding to new markets. The Strategic Growth Opportunities award opens doors to key opportunities in the Greater Bay Area, including connections with potential partners and suppliers. Challenged by UPTEC - Science and Technology Park of University of Porto, we competed against 17 leading tech companies from Brazil and Portugal. SoundEye is one of 100 up-and-coming companies representing 52 countries and territories selected to travel to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to compete in the Entrepreneurship World Cup Global Finals November 5-9. The competition, co-hosted by the Global Entrepreneurship Network and Saudi Arabia’s Small and Medium Enterprises General Authority, Monsha’at, is one of its largest and most diverse pitch competitions and support programs. Every year, tens of thousands of entrepreneurs from 200 countries and territories compete for US$1 million in cash prizes and millions more worth of investment, support and publicity through national pitch competitions, boot camps and a global finals event attended by leading investors. After months of competition in national and regional qualifiers, global pool selections, and a boot camp for the top 250 companies, the top 100 will face off at the Global Finals during Biban 24. The companies, known collectively as the “Entrepreneurship World Cup 100 (EWC 100)”, are based in: Africa (12), Asia (22), the Caribbean (2), Europe (23), the Middle East (9), North America (15), Oceania (2), and South America (15). While in Riyadh, the EWC 100 will also experience Saudi Arabia’s emerging startup scene and explore opportunities to tap into a new market. In recent years, the ecosystem has seen transformational growth with record highs in venture capital investments. Since launching in 2019, the competition has attracted more than 430,000 registrations from 200 countries and connected founders with over US$4M in cash prizes and another US$266M worth of free support and services. Having participated in the CIX Summit 2024, I am compelled to share my reflections on an event that proved to be a crucible of innovation and entrepreneurship. The summit provided an unparalleled platform for engaging with some of the most visionary and accomplished figures in the startup ecosystem. The opportunity to network was particularly notable, fostering valuable connections that I believe will have a lasting impact. However, every great event offers lessons on areas for enhancement. A point of improvement I observed was within the Meeting Exchanges segment. The limited number of experts available for in-depth discussions on the pre seed stage was noticeable. Those of us encountering registration delays faced challenges in securing these invaluable interactions, highlighting a potential area for future refinement. For subsequent iterations of the summit, I advocate for the introduction of a bespoke matching system. This would ensure startups are paired with experts based on their specific industry focus and strategic objectives, optimizing the value of these mentorship sessions. Moreover, the pronounced presence of Iranian entrepreneurs at the summit was both inspiring and indicative of the vibrant talent pool within our community, especially here in Toronto. This underscores the significant contributions and potential our community holds within the global entrepreneurial landscape. Looking forward to the future, I am enthusiastic about the prospect of these enhancements being integrated into the next CIX Summit.
