The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and the African Development Bank (AfDB), presented, on the 18th of July, the 2024 Africa Sustainable Development Report (ASDR), at an event held on the margins of the UN High-Level Political Forum for Sustainable Development in New York. Titled ‘Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises: The Effective Delivery of Sustainable, Resilient and Innovative Solutions’, the report provides an in-depth review of African countries progress towards five sustainable development goals and their 32 targets to meet the 2030 Agenda and the African Union 2063 Agenda. The five SDGs under review are: ending poverty (Goal 1); eliminating hunger (Goal 2); combating climate change (Goal 13); promoting peaceful societies (Goal 16) and strengthening global partnerships (Goal 17). With different initiatives proposed to address these issues, two areas that stood out for me are: 1. Providing innovative financing and strengthening partnerships. 2. Scaled-up access to concessionary development financing, strengthened climate information and early warning systems, and economic reforms are amongst the key recommendations raised in the new ASDR, titled “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises: The Effective Delivery of Sustainable, Resilient and Innovative Solutions.” The report provides an in-depth review of African countries progress towards five sustainable development goals and their 32 targets to meet the 2030 Agenda and the African Union 2063 Agenda. The five SDGs under review are: ending poverty (Goal 1); eliminating hunger (Goal 2); combating climate change (Goal 13); promoting peaceful societies (Goal 16) and strengthening global partnerships (Goal 17). The research shows that Africa is on track to reach only less than three of the 32 targets assessed in this report (ASDR-2024) and that setbacks have been recorded for 8 of them, with slow progress or status quo registered for the remaining targets.

The continent is also facing an alarming increase in the number of people facing hunger, undernourishment, and stunting. Modest progress in poverty reduction has been offset by multiple crises in recent years, and social protection is inadequate in coverage, fragmented, and largely informal. Comprehensive economic and institutional reforms to enhance efficiency and optimal use of resources are among the report’s recommendations.

Over the years since the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) inception, all member countries including Nigeria have mobilized efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, among others. In Nigeria, the government has put forth national development plans/policies that align with the SDGs' aim. Since such policies have been put forth, analysing how far Nigeria has improved in some of the UN’s SDGs is pivotal. In this article, Pgt. Maryann Egwuchukwu, Pgt. Ubah Vivian, and Pgt. On wednesday been the 5th of June, the Minister of Environment, Hon Balarabe Abbas Lawal had the honor of unveiling Climate Justice Youth Ambassador (CJYA) an initiative of Oxfam in Nigeria, by symbolically capping them to confirm their new roles aimed at promoting climate Justice and supporting the national climate change plan. CJYA is not domiciled within any particular state. It's membership spans across the entire Nigeria region, comprising individuals from various backgrounds, including rural and urban communities. United by a shared vision to promote climate justice, circular economy, sustainability and to seek for a new and better planet by focusing it's target in Nigeria. Guided by the principles of adaptive and transformative change, progress, discipline, inclusivity and sustainable values. The CJYA advocates for the local people, women, Africa youths and the Africa continent that bears most of the man-made climate crisis.
