The "S" word is overused. You know, the word everyone says all the time but has a million different meanings? Strategy... It's basically meaningless and undefinable at this point.. In his book The Advantage; Patrick Lencioni shares how he froze when a client asked him to develop a strategy AFTER doing it for years...🤷🏼♂️ After some research and thoughtful reflection he developed a process to define the S word: His new definition? Strategy is; Nothing more than intentional and consistent decisions the company makes to succeed 🎯 That's pretty ambiguous too so he developed Strategic Anchors ⚓ How do you identify these Anchors? Reverse Engineer and extract them from everything you know to be true, about the company today... Create a list of all decisions and realities and include anything beyond: - Reason for existence - Core values - Business definition The list must be exhaustive and include redundant items with no clear taxonomy between them... Better to be redundant AND consistent to get the whole messy picture.. The process continues in his book and I can tell you i'll never look at The S Word the same 💡 It's a great read and worth your time as you decide how you want to succeed in #business. #howyouhrmatters #theadvantage #culture

Thinking and acting at the same time is like writing a will while playing the trumpet Humans can't do acting and thinking simultaneously. And if they must choose, they often opt for acting, even when they’d better think. Our distant ancestors who lived in caves had relatively simple tasks and problems (from a problem-solving point of view). Their life was hard and dangerous, but they didn’t face strategic challenges. They didn't even think about what uni they should select for their kids. The world has changed a lot since then, but we still use the same OS. When we face challenges, we act instinctively. Old natural habits die hard. That's why I keep a motto above my desk: “Zoom out and think!” No matter how hard we must work and how many urgent problems are waiting for our attention, we need to allocate some time for strategy. This reminds me of the concept of "always allowing for fallibility"! Knowing that we need time to think and time to act is easy. Most people know that. You think when you need to think and act when you need to act. However, the vast majority does not allow for misperceptions or even believe they could possibly be wrong! Yet we are. Everyone is, many times. What happens when you think it would have been better to act, or you act when it would have been better to think? That's what Svyatoslav Biryulin is talking about. Given our natural bias for action, we instinctively understand the opportunity cost of not having acted when we should have. How many regrets don't take the form of "Oh, if only I had acted then and there?" And yet! Take a look around. How much chaos is continuously being created through rash action! How many lost jobs, failed businesses, and human suffering could be avoided by reflecting more? We certainly shouldn't overcorrect and become passive, pure thinkers. But thinking a bit more, thinking better, and thinking strategically would go a long way toward helping us achieve our best potential!

"Great strategy is born of clarity, not complexity." – Jim Collins Clarity drives results. The most effective strategies are often the simplest. When we cut through the noise and free our thinking from extraneous detail, we unlock the power to make decisions that truly matter. An 80-page PPT proposal is not impressive when it masks the core issue or dilutes the focus; it’s wasteful. Eschew complexity—it's simplicity that leads to real impact.

This book literally changed my life…. ‘Meditations’ by Marcus Aurelius holds many treasures but this one seems to have embedded itself in my mind since the first time I read it. It’s a powerful reminder for us business owners: focus on what truly matters. Prioritise impactful actions that drive growth and long-term success. By aligning daily tasks with your broader mission, you ensure that every effort is meaningful and fear of losing trivial pursuits is diminished. Let’s commit to making every moment count in our professional journey.

What the heck is #strategy anyway? For more than 20 years, I've been exploring the answer to that question. About 20 years ago, I made a presentation on this topic that got much attention. This presentation, viewed by hundreds of thousands and ranked in the top 1% on Slideshare, was a significant milestone in my journey. It was a big deal at the time, and its popularity speaks to the relevance of the topic. 😎 I've updated the presentation a few times since then. Here's a version from 2011 that still serves as a great introduction. If I were to do it again today, I would definitely make some changes to the layout and design. ;-) Overall, it's still a good way to understand the basics of strategy. What is strategy to you? Tell me in the comments! ⎯ Hi 👋 I’m Marc Sniukas. I equip ambitious CEOs and their teams with proven systems to make better strategy. Fast and pragmatic, without the BS of old-school approaches. DM me to learn more.
