As a founder of a startup, who would you hire first – a VP of Sales or a VP of Marketing? Let’s assume your startup uses an inside sales model, where deals are closed by sales reps. You currently have two AEs on your team. You’ve reached (or are close to reaching) product-market fit, and your team can convert leads and close deals effectively. Your churn rate is acceptable, and you're focused on small and mid-sized businesses. Now, you need to go into stealth mode and make a strategic hire. The question is, who should it be? A VP of Sales or a VP of Marketing? This is a tough call. 🔹 If you need to improve sales efficiency, streamline processes, and recruit more talented sales reps, a VP of Sales might be your top priority. 🔹 On the other hand, if your sales team is already performing well and you need to increase lead volume and build brand awareness, then hiring a VP of Marketing could be the better option. So, what would you do? Would you have your AEs source leads themselves or create a sales development function for cold outreach and bring in a VP of Sales to manage the team❓ Or would you focus on driving more inbound leads and building brand awareness, which is strategically important, and hire a VP of Marketing❓ What would be your choice and why?

Just saw a list of 500+ "marketers" looking for their next role to find someone who has relevant experience in community engagement and there was a jumble of titles that could mean a variety of different things depending on the company and industry: "Sales Administrator" "Client Solutions Architect" "Customer Experience Director" along with the usual "Strategic Marketing Manager" and "Growth Marketer." I find it interesting how many people consider themselves to be in marketing but also can see the difficulty in finding the type of role that fits what you want to do. And the flip side—how are companies hiring for marketing roles?? Are they missing out on the right person because they're weeding out based on job title?

Time for my once annual #salespost. I hate getting dragged down the engagement-baiting rabbit hole, but here we are I suppose... Let's take the "I won't hire you if you have less that 1,000 followers" idea at face value...how many folks area actually in your hiring pool now? Sounds like Scott is going to have 200 SDRs/AEs to choose from who've figured out how to repackage the same 5 sales du jour topics (multi-threading!!, personalized outreach!!, value added follow-ups!!). I get on here maybe once a day, and it's basically 25-50 influencer accounts reheating their leftovers and playing engagement ping pong in the comments section. And you're telling me this is the lead gen of the future? Bleak. Of course outbound is hard (as it has always been), but does that mean that the panacea of social selling will cure all ills? Color me skeptical. Even if it was, it will just be added to the list of channels that buying personas go out of their way to ignore. How valuable are your 10k followers now? The tough truth? If you work at a SaaS company that doesn't have product-market fit...every method of outbound will invariably feel like shouting into the wind. Your org does have product-market fit? Great! Now you just have to continue doing the boring stuff at a low success rate (with consistency) until the timing is right and the stars align. I've worked with dozens of immensely talented salespeople in my career who gone on to Director, VP, and CRO roles (or just crush it as an IC). None of them have any modicum of a social following. What they do know is how to drive deals forward, hold prospects accountable, lead with curiosity, run good discovery, place traps for competitors, ask good questions, etc. That's enough though, signing off, see you next year.

There is a zero percent chance I would hire you for any role in sales or marketing if you have less than 1,000 followers on this platform. Well, that is of course if all other things are equal. Here's why:

There is a difference between Marketing and Sales. Although they exsist to support each other. Do not list a role for a Marketing Manager and require them to make cold calls, go door to door, or offer them a commission based contract. That is sales. Effective marketing enhances your digital footprint, drives customers to you, aids in public/customer relations, and tells the story of your brand. Not to say the two departments don’t occasionally blend. But let’s stop with the nonsense of calling an entry level sales associate a “marketing specialist or marketing manager”
