Last week, LA Times published yet another article discussing how pulse oximeters failed populations with darker skin, leading to delayed or improper treatments in COVID patients. “This device is really used almost like a vital sign, like you would use a blood pressure cuff,” Aboelata recalled. “How horrified you would feel if you suddenly found out that your blood pressure cuff didn’t work on a certain demographic of your patients?” I have said this many times. We need more diverse leaders in wearables. We need diverse engineers and data scientists. We need to be testing our devices with populations spanning all gender, age, BMI and skin tone. Hydrostasis team has built in skin tone in our user profile and algorithms as well as hardware design to address this issue in our first product, the Geca Watch. Hydrostasis’ big audacious goal is to build hydration status into a vital sign. We hope to make a step toward health equity in the process. The ability to monitor patients remotely is one of #AI’s most significant value propositions. Real-time wearable devices allow clinicians to continuously track vital signs like heart rate, glucose levels, and blood pressure. A growing number of companies are interested in providing tools and services to enable remote patient monitoring. One example is the Apple Watch, which integrates AI to detect irregular heart rhythms, alerting users to potential atrial fibrillation. Similarly, Fitbit’s Sense tracks metrics like stress levels and skin temperature to provide early warnings for possible health conditions. AI-integrated wearables like Medtronic's Guardian™ Connect System, designed for diabetes management, use predictive algorithms to forecast glucose trends, helping patients manage their condition with precision. These innovations enable better chronic disease management, reduce hospital readmissions, and empower patients to take control of their health. However, while the benefits are significant, ensuring equitable access is crucial to prevent widening health disparities. #AIinHealthcare #PatientMonitoring #WearableTech #HealthcareInnovation #DigitalHealth #ChronicDiseaseManagement #MedTech

It's getting crowded on your finger The wearables space is still in full swing. Next to market leader ŌURA, we have seen the recent releases of Samsung Electronics' Galaxy ring and of Happy Ring - "a clinical lab wrapped around your finger" from Happy Health (https://www.happyring.com/). Now there is a novel FDA approved contestor in the game: the EvieMED ring from Movano Health. EvieMED Ring is a smart ring that combines medical and wellness metrics, including blood oxygen levels, heart rate and metrics related to energy, logging of mood, sleep and activity, temperature variability, calories burned and respiration rate that can give both patients and healthcare providers a broader picture of the user's overall wellness. A pivotal study also found that the EvieMED Ring produces accurate readings among users with darker skin tones as measured by the Fitzpatrick scale of skin color classification. The EvieMED Ring will be available in eight sizes ranging from 5 to 12 to accommodate the widest selection of patients. We keep track of these development in our Healthskouts database of certified #digitalhealth apps and devices. We look forward to a chance to compare them next to each other ...
