#ThankfulThursday and today, I'm #grateful for committed senior leadership. A wise mentor of mine, who had HR responsibilities serving 100K+ employees for a good chunk of his career, made the point that the single biggest difference for the experience of the HR professional is the CEO. The backdrop of Deming's Deadly Disease #4: mobility of top management, reminded me of his insight. In talking with CHROs (regardless of title, simply the senior most HR role) in organizations, I've found the changes in senior leadership are a catalyst for the CHRO change as well... Sometimes, the fresh take on the organization, perhaps coupled with a deep regard for how the CEO can most effectively partner with the CHRO, has enabled the CHRO to stay and thrive. Other times, the CEO simply prefers to build their own team, and the CHRO is impacted alongside other members of the leadership team. When change happens at the highest levels in an organization, not just at the CEO level, there are incalculable lost opportunities. Effective leadership requires time: to deeply understand the business, to build trusting relationships, to set the course for the future. The challenges for senior leadership, including HR, are strategic thinking and the ability to achieve results, being adaptive, demonstrating emotional intelligence based on comprehensive self-awareness, possessing strong technology and data acumen...the list goes on and on, but at the core of any leader's effectiveness is the ability to establish and sustain trust. With the current trends in CEO departures (first quarter 2024 saw highest CEO turnover on record), the average tenure in that role is about 4 years, mirroring overall employee tenure. This reality creates clear challenges for the CHRO in creating environments that shorten learning curves at all levels, and especially focus on intentional development opportunities that include learning how to build, and maintain, trust. Identifying candidates for all levels of roles who are well-equipped to adapt, are fast learners, cope with stress effectively, possess awareness of self and others, and demonstrate good judgment, seems to be the most logical and data-driven approach to overcome the mobility of talent challenge. Those CHROs who lead the people function with such tools will prevail, regardless of what happens with changes at senior management levels.

In the realm of HR leadership, titles can vary widely across companies, with titles like Chief People Officer (CPO) and Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) often used interchangeably. However, based on insights from my HR leadership network and experience in HR exec search at Frazer Jones, differences can come up. ⭐ While both roles oversee human capital, they can have a different focus: CPOs prioritize strategic initiatives such as talent development and culture-building, often reporting directly to the CEO, while CHROs typically manage day-to-day HR operations, ensuring compliance and efficiency and might report to the CEO but sometimes the COO or CFO.
