In October of last year I started a new job as the leader at the Oshkosh Food Co-op. I took this position after spending the last 10 years in the coffee industry. Starting over or starting from scratch can be daunting, but the wealth of experience accumulated over the years serves as a formidable foundation. Every challenge faced, every obstacle overcome, and every lesson learned contributes to a reservoir of knowledge and resilience. It's the culmination of years spent honing skills, making mistakes, and growing both personally and professionally. Embracing a fresh start is not about erasing the past, but rather building upon it. I’ve worked closely with the elite of the elite, who built empires like Cimpress Group (VistaPrint) and Capital One bank. From outside what they do looks like magic. It isn’t. They weren’t born at that level. They focused on improving their skills to be great at a specific thing. Really great. Those skills then allowed them to know an opportunity when they saw it and pursue it with conviction. This isn’t to diminish their talent, it’s just not what seems to truly set them apart. I’ve learned more about business in a single board meeting with them than I did in three business degrees. One of those learnings is that almost anyone can become exceptional if they work hard at developing their skill set then commit to the opportunity that leverages those skills when it arrives. The realisation that it’s not magic has been huge for me personally in moving past imposter syndrome. Good People practice. It is not that companies don't know what is good for people, know but fail to make it a priority. I will say that there are quite a similarities between healthy habits and good people practices. Both are critical for survival. Both shows results after long term consistent efforts. People buy healthy gadget/Gym memberships but fails on disciplned execution. Similarly people implement great technical tools, take teams to resorts, give gifts but fail to treat employees as human. Knowing what to do doesn't help till you act and make it a top priority. Have you seen it.
