✍ In a recent FE News piece, BusinessLDN's Policy Delivery Director Mark Hilton emphasises the need for the government to learn lessons from the success of Local Skills Improvement Plans in attempts to make real change in addressing skills gaps across the UK. 💡 Hilton, drawing on BusinessLDN's own work in developing their own London Local Skills Improvement Plan, argues that LSIPs can prove effective in supporting more firms to work with further education colleges, deliver apprenticeships and co-create training courses. 🗣 "Skills England should embrace the findings from the LSIP in London and those developed for other regions, along with the spirit of collaboration that underpins them. Because it’s only through a process of conversation and collaboration, between all those who play a role in addressing skills gaps across the UK, that we can create a thriving and dynamic UK workforce that’s fit for the future." #apprenticeships #LSIP #skills https://lnkd.in/e_EQex4Q

The CIPD welcomes the UK Government's 'Get Britain Working' plans to tackle economic inactivity and boost workforce inclusion, however, we also call for a greater ambition from government to boost the profile of apprenticeships and build better links between employers and jobcentres. 🚀 Peter Cheese, Chief Executive of the CIPD says: 🔸Get Britain Working is a step in the right direction to tackle the UK’s stubborn challenge of economic inactivity. 🔸 Piloting joined up support services in some of the worst affected areas will provide some invaluable learnings that can then be applied more broadly, while helping people into work. 🔸 We welcome the launch of the ‘Keep Britain Working’ Review to see how employers can recruit and retain employees with health conditions, mobility issues and those returning to work after periods of sickness or longer-term absence. 🔸 As the CIPD, we will be engaging with our members in the people profession to inform this important review and ensure that those that are able to work, can find work that also works for them. 🎓 The UK's Skills Crisis: Time for Smart Solutions 🚀 A powerful new piece by Paul Aristides from Anderson Quigley and Justin Rix from Grant Thornton UK LLP & WorldSkills UK breaks down the skills gap challenge. They show that while 1 in 3 job vacancies are due to skills shortages, the solutions are more achievable than we think! Here's what's working and what needs to change: 🏢 Education providers and businesses must form stronger partnerships - especially with SMEs that comprise 99% of UK businesses. When large companies help smaller ones access training resources, everyone wins! 🎯 Colleges and universities should proactively contact employers about upskilling their supply chains. Success stories create ripple effects that benefit entire industries. 👥 Leadership matters - having industry professionals on educational boards brings a vital real-world perspective to training programs. We need more crossover between FE and university governance. 📈 Strategic workforce planning doesn't have to be complicated. It's about setting clear goals, identifying gaps, and creating practical pathways to fill them. The solutions exist, and they're not complex or expensive. However, as Paul and Justin emphasise, they require immediate action from everyone - educators, employers, and sector bodies working together to secure the economic future! Let's bridge the gap together! 💪 https://lnkd.in/dH3qgvD8 #SkillsGap #UKEducation #WorkforceDevelopment #Training #Apprenticeships #FutureOfWork #UKBusiness #CareerDevelopment
