It is vital that the digital skills of the UK workforce are addressed if we are to achieve the business growth and economic recovery enshrined within the Labour Party mission statement. Engagement with the FutureDotNow framework will be an essential cog in the skills education machinery and a very useful reference point for Skills England
We welcome today's launch of Skills England, which presents a significant opportunity to supercharge workplace digital skills. We are now looking forward to supporting interim Chair Richard Pennycook and his team to ensure that this opportunity is fully realised. As FutureDotNow CEO Liz Williams MBE said in her blog last week responding to the King’s Speech (https://lnkd.in/eK9V7Gmw), it’s critical that the new government recognises the barrier the workforce digital skills deficit represents to realising its aspirations for opportunity and growth. With industry already stepping up and taking action to close the digital skills gap, we need government to match this energy and bring in ambition and action from the top, helping us build a labour force with the core digital skills essential for growth and prosperity for all. The signs that the new government is connecting the dots are positive. It’s encouraging to see Department for Education Secretary of State Bridget Phillipson recognise that “employers want to invest in their workers but for too long have been held back from accessing the training they need.” As the leading industry coalition focused on uniting employers to drive up workforce digital capability, at FutureDotNow we know only too well that this frustration from business is real. As the existing Apprenticeship Levy evolves into the Growth and Skills Levy and Skills England works to identify the training for which the levy will be accessible, it’s vital that essential digital skills are part of that picture. For example, requiring all apprenticeships to incorporate digital essentials regardless of discipline, and allowing employers to provide essential digital skills training via the levy would immediately unlock significant business capacity and pump-prime action. It is also heartening to see that part of the Skills England remit is to build strong relationships with industry. A deep understanding of the specific needs of both employers and employees will be crucial to Skills England playing its role in kickstarting economic growth. At FutureDotNow, we’ve convened a powerful, energised community of leading employers focused on closing the digital skills gap and we’d welcome the chance to work with Skills England to, quoting the Secretary of State, ‘harness the talents of all our people to unlock growth and break down the barriers to opportunity’. #DigitalSkills #FutureOfWork #SkillsEngland #Growth #BarriersToOpportunity #SkillsPolicy

Exciting Times at the Midlands LSIP Celebration ⭐ Amanda Knight was delighted to attend the Midlands LSIP (Local Skills Improvement Plan, part of the #DfE led Local Skills Improvement Fund) Celebration event, where so many passionate professionals are working together to drive economic growth and enhance skills across the region. 🔑 Key Sectors with Skills Priorities Identified: - Manufacturing & Engineering - Construction - Health & Social Care 📊 Key Transferable Skills Highlighted: - Digital Literacy - Leadership - Adaptability Not surprisingly, behaviour was voted as a key development priority for employers when considering knowledge, skills, and behaviour. At Cognisco, we recognise that these three elements are deeply interconnected: People need the right #knowledge, Build #skills on that foundation, and Demonstrate the appropriate #behaviours when applying them. Another important question raised was: "How can we measure behaviour?" By combining these three elements with #confidence, Cognisco’s MyKnow 365 provides a framework to measure and predict likely behaviours. This ensures your teams are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours they need for success. #MidlandsLSIP #DfE #SkillsImprovement #EconomicGrowth #Cognisco #MyKnow365

This one is from Ireland and was also at the 5th #VPLBiennale in Kilkenny: #RPL backed by a university, but captured and developed outside of academia, in a workplace context. In the (gasp!) wild. You can learn more at ePIC 2024 #openepic by registering here: https://lnkd.in/gmMvHaNH The APRIL project works with industry partners and their employees to blend their years of professional practice with new applied academic knowledge, focusing on solutions to data and technology-based challenges in the workplace. APRIL provides customized education options that leverage RPL to provide pathways into programs and advanced standing by valuing a diverse range of work-based learnings. The cohort approach delivers time and cost savings while it accelerates the skills development of larger numbers of employees. APRIL was co-designed and is being refined and enhanced through a collaborative approach involving industry partners, industry liaison officers, Heads of Faculty/Dept and their academic teams. Feedback from industry partners confirms that APRIL is a timely and useful approach to retain and nurture talent and to create career-long relationships with education partners. This is a really useful narrative to counteract the general lack of awareness of the value of RPL, especially in industry, which is an issue we're also dealing with in Canada at CAPLA.ca: if nobody knows, nobody goes.. It's a great example of Work Integrated Learning #WIL, or as Beverley Oliver suggested a few years back, Learning Integrated Work #LIW. Even some hints of "Recognition As You Go" for the #CAYG folks. Not just for individuals, but cohort-based. Christine McCabe is a leader in Ireland's current push for RPL and it's easy to recognize that she knows what she's talking about. I'm particularly intrigued by this slide that I saw: Models of RPL Cohort Engagement - Prior Learning is mapped to an existing programme (yes OK, pretty familiar...) - Development of customised learning solutions Workplace competences, informal and nonformal learning are integrated into the content and learning outcomes of **new or adapted programmes**. (ooh, asterisks mine) Could this mean what I think it means? Find out in Paris... #recognitionoflearning #RoL #RVA #WorkIntegratedLearning #LearningAtWork #WhatAConcept #VPL #PLAR #PLA #CPL #RVA #RAC #VAE #lifelonglearning #lifewidelearning #openrecognition

We were privileged to attend the insightful Employment and Skills Wales Convention, hosted by the Learning and Work Institute, showcasing the latest developments and innovations in #employment and #skills in Wales. The event provided a unique platform to understand how global trends are reshaping Wales' workforce. 🔍 Here are our key takeaways from the event: ➡️ The unemployment rate in Wales was reported to be 53,300 in the year ending March 2024, yet a staggering 540,700 people were economically inactive between April to June 2024. ➡️ The industry is placing a significant emphasis on soft skills, highlighting the need for these abilities in the current job marketplace. ➡️ There's an ongoing debate about the effectiveness of current educational curriculums in preparing young people for today’s job market. 🗣 One of the highlights was the panel discussion, 'A Work, Health, and Skills Plan for Wales', with our very own Sales Director for Employment and Skills, Megan Cooper. Megan's rich insights about the evolving workforce landscape and the importance of health and well-being in the workplace were truly enlightening. At Serco, we remain committed to driving employment and skills forward, and events like these reinforce the importance of our work. We look forward to putting these insights into action and continuing to contribute to the development of skills and employment in Wales. 🎥 Watch our short video to find out what we thought about the event. #ESCymru24 #learninganddevelopment #trainingandeducation Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), Claire Lane, Hannah Monaghan, David Elsmere FIEP, Emma Wood (She/Her), David Ward, Andy Bowie FIEP
