@UNEP Intergovernmental Negotiations Committee INC-4 is ongoing in Ottawa, Canada. While following up on the progress so far, I stumbled on one of the many reasons why we must be decisive in the fight against climate change. The impacts of man’s irresponsible use of the environment is no longer imminent but already here and wreaking havoc. As global leaders continue to deliberate and draft legislation to regulate plastic pollution, Extended Producer Responsible (EPR) should be considered a means to promote sustainable production. Growing up, we saw how soda producing companies sold in glass bottles and established a system to retrieve their empty bottles, it will benefit us all to have that system in a more sophisticated manner in place to prevent further pollution. I implore delete at the INC-4 to do right by our environment and future generations, It is possible Inger Andersen Dr. Richard Munang United Nations United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre

The EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) has upped the ante on #sustainability reporting. By the start of next year, 50,000 publicly traded companies operating in the EU -- including an estimated 3,000 U.S. companies -- will need to meet the new reporting requirements, with smaller companies required to comply in future years. Learn what this means and how it relates to #WaterStewardship in our article in Raymond James' Water Quarterly (page 13): https://ow.ly/F7oB50SXZbW Want to know more? Happy Earth Day 🌍 This year's theme is Planet vs. Plastics, which if I am honest did not come as a surprise. Constant media conversations are happening around plastics; whenever I speak to clients about sustainability they will always talk about reducing their carbon footprint and plastic-free packaging, but as we all know sustainability goes deeper than that. My suggestions for you today:- Yes, we need to banish single-use plastics where we can, and start to seek out alternatives. But look to strengthen and adapt your supply chains for refill, reuse, and repair. As companies spend the day calling out the ESG reports, sustainability progress, and carbon footprint reductions, also take time today to look closer to home. What are you doing on a personal level around sustainability and consumption? WWF has a great questionnaire to get you thinking. https://lnkd.in/er9fgtcB

Countries leaving global climate negotiations without reaching an agreement seems to be a recurring theme (recurring nightmare?) these days... it’s disheartening. And exactly why we need the stories of optimism as well. We keep going. 🌱 OPTIMISM 1: A landmark climate change case led by island states begins at the world’s highest court (ICJ) today to examine countries’ legal requirements on combatting climate change and supporting vulnerable nations. 🔥 OUTRAGE 1: A deeply disappointing outcome at the plastic pollution treaty talks, with no agreement reached. Calls for limits on plastic production (as well as pollution) were blocked by some oil-producing countries. Talks to resume next year. 🌱 OPTIMISM 2: A glimmer of optimism in what is a huge outrage: WWF has taken legal action against the Norwegian government for opening areas for deep seabed mining which severely threatens already fragile ocean ecosystems. 🔥 OUTRAGE 2: Heatwaves are surpassing the extremes predicted by climate models A new study has identified "hotspots" where temperatures are spiking far beyond what is expected as the planet warms, with some of the most striking examples occurring in the Pacific Northwest and southwestern Canada. 🌱 OPTIMISM 3: A new record for renewable energy in Australia with 45% of the energy share set to be from renewable sources next year. The Australian government’s target is 82% of energy from renewables by 2030. 🔥 OUTRAGE 3: A new study shows that heatwaves are surpassing the extremes predicted by climate models in "hotspots" around the world, many in places poorly equipped to deal with intense heat, with deadly consequences. As always each news item we’ve included is a complex story in its own right, reduced here to a single line as a potential signpost for further reading. You can find the links to the news sources in the comments. 🎧 Feed your ears with more outrage and optimism - don’t miss this Thursday’s special episode for analysis of the UN plastics treaty outcome from Christiana Figueres and Ellen MacArthur.
