European Business Summit invited our Director General Geneviève Pons-Deladrière to join a dynamic discussion on “The Future of Agriculture: Balancing Sustainability, Succession, and Global Trade,” alongside Mihail Dumitru and Olivier de Matos, and moderated by Jack Parrock. A central question discussed during the panel session was how we can reconcile economic, social, and environmental sustainability in the farming sector. Her answer: collaboration among all actors of the agri-food chain is essential. The Strategic Dialogue has marked a pivotal step towards driving sustainable change, and it is important now to keep the political momentum. She highlighted one major achievement of the dialogue: the emphasis on demand-side policies, including those related to dietary patterns. However, she also pointed out a key shortcoming: the absence of international considerations in the recommendations, which must be addressed. When asked about the challenges posed by the potential EU enlargement to include Ukraine, she noted that such an expansion would require a reconsideration of the criteria for allocating CAP subsidies. This could pave the way at last for a highly desirable revision of the policy, shifting focus away from farm size and towards social and environmental criteria.

“The #eugreendeal raises the mark on sustainability, and it contributes to a more level playing field in global relations. However, with it comes several challenges for third countries regarding market access. Therefore, new trading policies will surely need to look into non-tariff measures and the higher standards required. The early adopters have the chance to catch the wave early.” summarized our alumna, Ana Stoddart the online webinar she hosted on 15th of March, raising the question ‘Is the EU green deal leading the future of global agricultural trade?’ In cooperation with the Alumniportal Deutschland Ana Stoddart summoned experts on agricultural trade such as Rene Capote, Emanuele Ferrari and Samuel Weniga Anuga, who argued that, "The EU Green Deal will boost global agricultural trade, particularly by fostering SME growth in third-world countries. Strategic measures for guaranteeing market and pricing premiums can boost trade volumes in Europe while also boosting the agricultural value chain in third-world countries". Samuel Weniga Anuga is a fellow at AIA NRW researching on ‘Weaponized Interdependence and Renewable Energy Transitions in Africa-Europe Relations: Impact of the EU Green Deal’ and will stay in Bonn until November 2024. 🌍 Attending the EU CAP Network'𝐬 “𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐏𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩: 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐒𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐀𝐏 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬” 𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐮𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬𝐭 was an eye-opener into the ongoing efforts to make the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) more accessible and practical for both beneficiaries and administrations. We discussed how simplification goes beyond cutting paperwork; it’s about building a system that allows rural communities to access resources more easily. It was valuable to witness how different EU regions are approaching CAP implementation and simplification. Sharing these strategies opens doors for consistent progress across member states, benefiting more communities. 🌐 At the same time, European leaders gathered in Budapest to address the need for a resilient, sustainable future across sectors, including agriculture. Leaders emphasized creating stable frameworks for farmers, strengthening their role within the food supply chain, and ensuring fair competition in the market. This alignment underlines how agricultural resilience is woven into broader EU priorities for sustainability and stability. Looking ahead, these shared priorities will be crucial for building a more resilient and sustainable future across all sectors. 🌱 PwC Polska Agnieszka Gajewska Dionizy Smoleń Paweł Oleszczuk Tomasz Kierzkowski Marta Gocłowska Julia Otwinowska Adam Gajek Michalina Wacław Przemysław Kurlandt

Just reading the interesting EU report Monitoring the twin transition of industrial ecosystems, AGRI-FOOD. It seems things are picking up - at least in many parts of Europe. But I need to bash my home, Sweden. With some of the best pre-conditions around for making a transition into the next gen food system nothing much happens under the current government and its so-called innovation authorities. Do take a look at this picture, Vinnova, and explain to me how on Earth this can be the case in 2024. Any basic strategic insights you would like to share that can motivate this glaring absence of focus on one of the main topics of our time? https://lnkd.in/d3WKywnp

Have you ever wondered what the role of traders is in achieving sustainability outcomes in agriculture-food value chains like coffee? I'm happy to share our new publication, authored by my amazing colleague Angela Navarrete-Cruz https://lnkd.in/ed5jAPBP 👇 While much attention has been focused on producers and consumers, this paper highlights how traders play a pivotal role in advancing sustainability goals. By analyzing the intricate relationships and governance mechanisms between farmers and traders, our research sheds light on the significant impact that traders have on the overall resilience and sustainability of agricultural systems. Using the Colombian coffee sector as a case study, the paper explores various governance mechanisms that facilitate the connection between farmers and traders. These mechanisms are key to understanding how traders can both directly and indirectly influence sustainability efforts within the sector. Through these governance structures, traders not only support the adoption of sustainable practices among farmers but also help ensure the stability and longevity of the value chain, benefiting all stakeholders involved. Our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the role of traders in agri-food value chains and offer valuable insights into how traders can be effectively integrated into broader sustainability initiatives. By recognizing and harnessing the influence of traders, policymakers and industry leaders can develop more comprehensive strategies to enhance sustainability across the entire value chain, ultimately leading to more resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.
📢 Publication alert!!! Due to the bad reputation of traders, their role in achieving sustainability goals and enhancing the resilience of agricultural value chains is often neglected. This paper addresses this gap by focusing on the role of export companies in the on-farm adoption of Voluntary Sustainability Standards in the coffee sector in Colombia. What did we find? Export companies engage in complex collaboration schemes with smallholders! How and when could these schemes contribute to the sustainability and resilience of agricultural value chains? Find some answers here 👇 Thanks to my amazing co-author Dr. Athena Birkenberg, the University of Hohenheim for offering scientific support and hosting this research project, and the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development for the funds provided!

The future of Europe is bio-based 🎉On Friday, the Ecofin Council adopted the European Investment Bank (EIB)'s Strategic Roadmap for 2024-2027. This comprehensive plan outlines eight key priorities, and we are particularly pleased about the inclusion of bioeconomy. 📈 The Roadmap emphasises boosting European resilience in agriculture and the bioeconomy. It outlines more financial support for adaptation and mitigation of the impact of climate change in the agricultural sector. Furthermore, it states that large investments are needed to make the sector resilient and sustainable as well as develop the bioeconomy and the circular economy. 🔬 This strategic focus will not only enhance food security and sustainable agriculture but also drive innovation in the biosolutions industry, contributing significantly to Europe's green transition. 🌍 The Strategic Roadmap is another important step towards a bio-based future of Europe, but we need to keep moving and supplement investments with regulatory reforms – and the European Biosolutions Coalition is ready to help make this happen! #EUbiocoalition #eu #bioeconomy #circulareconomy #agriculture #greentransition #sustainability
