"How to Deter Russia?" is the theme of the 20th annual Warsaw East European Conference at the University of Warsaw. It's the 1st time I am attending this conference and thoroughly enjoying it given its mixed academic-policy character. It's striking the level convergence on the key challenges facing Poland and the region, and how to respond, among scholars and policy practitioners.

I am grateful to Review of Democracy for the invitation to contribute to its special series dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement of the EU. In this piece I share my personal experiences and reflect on Ukraine's path to the EU. From being born in the Soviet Union to lecturing EU law in The Hague: my life trajectory has been profoundly impacted by the EU. In the meantime, Ukraine has overcome significant hurdles to grow closer to the EU: from bordering the EU since 2004 to obtaining candidate status in 2023.
“Despite the incredible diversity within Europe, certain European values unite us,” Galyna Kostiukevych, PhD writes in in our series remembering the 20th anniversary of the EU’s Eastern enlargement. Read it now: https://lnkd.in/dJbAy5yC

I’m excited to share the success of a recent meeting that marks a significant step toward a collaborative future between the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University, the Association of Colombian Universities (Académica ASCUN), and Universidad de Pamplona. This promising collaboration highlights the importance of bridging diverse academic efforts and research perspectives to enhance our understanding of conflict. As an analyst for the Uppsala Conflict Data Program (#UCDP), I recognize that collaboration with local experts and academia is essential. These partnerships not only ensure the legitimacy of our data but also provide a richer, more contextual understanding of conflicts. Our recent discussions with ASCUN and Universidad de Pamplona emphasize the pivotal role that local insights play in refining and expanding our datasets. The #LatinAmerica project, a cornerstone of #UCDP, is actively seeking to connect with local institutions, experts, and civil society organizations. Our goal is to foster an open dialogue about conflict trends in the region, enhancing the accuracy and depth of our data. We also invite Latin American #students interested in peace and conflict studies to join #UCDP as #interns, contributing to the coding of organized violence events in their respective areas. This hands-on experience not only enriches our project but also empowers students with practical skills and knowledge. The UCDP is committed to democratizing information by providing #free and #accessible #conflictdata to the world. By improving our datasets, we enhance global knowledge about ongoing conflicts, making it easier for everyone to access and understand this critical information. This #democratization of #data is a vital contribution to #peace, as it promotes transparency and informed decision-making. I am grateful for the enthusiasm and support from my friend Daniela Sánchez Duque and our colleagues in Colombia and look forward to the fruitful collaborations ahead. Together, we can make significant strides in understanding and addressing the complexities of conflict. #Collaboration #PeaceResearch #UCDP #ConflictData #LatinAmerica #HigherEducation #DemocratizationOfInformation #GlobalPeace

I truly believe in the importance of building bridges and exchanging experiences. That is why I was very glad and honored to welcome a delegation from Universidad de Pamplona and the Colombian Association of Universities Académica ASCUN at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University at Uppsala University last week. This visit provided an engaging space for exchange, allowing us to learn about their incredible field expertise. We also had the chance to present our Department and the Uppsala Rotary Peace Center . Additionally, together with my friend and colleague Maria Francisca Garcés Ocampo , we presented the Latin American project of the Uppsala Conflict Data Program. This meeting seems to mark the beginning of a promising cooperation and exchange.🇨🇴🇸🇪🕊

May 21st, 2002 In response to the unilateral standardization of culture and commercialization by large capital cultures facing humanity worldwide. It is an international anniversary established by the United Nations to ease conflicts and confrontations between peoples and capital on the premise of mutual respect through dialogue and compromise. In May, to mark World Day for Cultural Diversity Dialogue and Development, why don't we learn about 'The gaze of the Other : Documentary heritage of the Salesian apostolic Vicariate in the Ecuadorian Amazon, 1890-1930 ' and discuss the meaning of this Memory of the World.

I am deeply grateful to Prisma Ukraїna Research Platform for giving me the floor to discuss the collective construction of the memory of personal loss in the co-authored book “Can heavens see cats” (“Чи бачать небеса котів”): https://lnkd.in/ebXgctWf This book, which was published in 2024, is a unique phenomenon in contemporary Ukrainian literature: it comprises 36 short narratives written by 36 authors and weaved together into a coherent whole within the unifying conception. It is both a deeply moving book that records the tragedy of the lost lives and an important statement that Ukrainians are creating their own narratives to remember the Russo-Ukrainian war.
