At the heart of EURONAVAL 2024 was a TV studio where speakers were invited to take part each day. These included round tables, the first of which was held on Monday 4 November and hosted by Alix Valenti. [#Euronaval2024] ⚓ 💡 The Seaquest® S, produced by Naval Group’s subsidiary SIREHNA in partnership with Chantier Naval Couach - CNC, has been natively designed to be carried by warships. This unique capability was successfully tested two weeks ago, thanks to the active contribution of a #FREMM frigate of the Marine Nationale. Full integration on the frigate was made possible thanks to some key features of this USV: 🔹 9,3m length to fit the launch/recovery systems 🔹 communality of fuels with the frigate 🔹 reclining mast 🔹 ‘on the fly’ reconfiguration, allowing to tailor the Seaquest® S to meet its missions while onboard the ship, instead of ashore 🔹 ease of loading 🔹 mission system designed to be interfaced with the frigate’s Combat Management System Its modularity was also put to test, confirming its capabilities for reconnaissance, escort, port protection and cargo transport. During this test we also studied the concept of its use for Anti-Submarine Warfare and against swarms of UAVs. The Seaquest® S has demonstrated its value at sea as a force multiplier for naval forces. #PowerAtSea

Australia and the US have unveiled new prototype uncrewed underwater vehicles (UUVs), Ghost Shark and Manta Ray, respectively, to enhance Pacific naval defenses. These UUVs represent advancements in undersea warfare, aiming to exert power while minimizing human risk. Ghost Shark, developed by Australia and Anduril Australia, promises stealthy, long-range capabilities for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and strike missions. The US's Manta Ray, developed by Northrop Grumman, emphasizes modularity for various missions and ease of transport and assembly. Both projects face challenges in underwater communications and energy requirements but mark significant progress in military UUV technology. 📒 'An Evolution or a Revolution in Naval Warfare: USVs in the Black Sea' - New publication released 📒 My latest long form piece for the Australian Naval Institute's #Australiannavalreview titled 'An Evolution or a Revolution in Naval Warfare: USVs in the Black Sea' is now available on my website (just click the PDF). https://lnkd.in/gQaMa5M9. 🔻 Since the 22 Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine has waged an effective campaign of sea denial in the vicinity of the northern Black Sea. The sea-denial campaign has involved a spectrum of capabilities including cruise missiles, UAVs & USVs. 🔻 Whilst Ukraine is not the first to use USVs in conflict, and not the first to sink a surface combatant with a USV, there is no denying that the scale at which it has employed USVs against surface ships and infrastructure is an evolution of this capability. 🔻 The information warfare elements of the Russia - Ukraine war make it difficult to assess significant details to effectively analyse the Ukraniain USV campaign and the employment of Russian defences. There are clearly an increasing number of successful Ukrainian USV attacks on surface ships, with at least two sunk. 🔻 Whilst this is an important development, it must be acknowledged that at least two of these ships did not appear to be in an appropriate readiness state, & that the other ship, the corvette Ivanovets, had limited weapons to defend itself and appeared to detect the USVs late. 🔻 This is not to take away from the fact that surface ships are vulnerable to USVs in the littoral, and the operationally significant ranges of the attacks achieved by Ukrainian USVs demonstrate that the range of the littoral is increasing. 🔻 Navies employing conventional surface combatants would do well to analyse the successes of the Ukrainian Black Sea campaign and work hard to develop and deploy counter-USV capabilities. 🔻 The Ukrainian achievements in the Black Sea have been significant, but at this stage of the conflict, when the individual attacks are analysed, there is no evidence to suggest the end of the major surface combatants or a revolution in naval warfare. Embraer and Brazilian AF begin studies for special mission aircraft Embraer and the Brazilian Air Force announced the beginning of collaborative studies to identify potential platform adaptations for Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance missions. The platforms to be used are already operational in the Brazilian Air Force, such as the C-390 Millennium. “The Brazilian Air Force constantly monitors its ability to fulfill its missions completely in the current context, while also looking at future challenges and the evolution of technologies. Studying the adherence and adaptability of Embraer platforms to the future challenges of these missions is an expected way to maximize commonality and technological autonomy,” Lieutenant-Brigadier Marcelo Kanitz Damasceno, Commander of the Brazilian Air Force Photo: Embraer “Embraer has a successful track record in adapting its platforms for different objectives. Yet we risk misapplying lessons from these often land-based conflicts if we do not consider the unique nature of war from the sea, where longer ranges, maneuvering targets, and weapons systems (ships and aircraft) are inherently limited in what they can carry to the fight. Naval analysts should interpret lessons on unmanned systems employment within the unique constraints of operating from the maritime domain."
