This provision, often called the “impunity clause,” has sparked intense debate about the role of the African Court in addressing international crimes and upholding the rule of law. Despite these challenges, the Malabo Protocol remains an important initiative for enhancing regional accountability and justice in Africa. Its potential to address impunity for serious crimes, including genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, is significant.” 🎙️ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟. 𝐇𝐚𝐣𝐞𝐫 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐡, 𝐋𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧. “How do we in diaspora bridge the gap that exists to formulate public policy recommendations for the Palestine cause on a local, state, and national level?" Founder Hatem Bazian shares his take on why he took the initiative to found the Palestine Center for Public Policy. Through research and scholarship, the Center will address a myriad of issues: how do we consider the work for Palestine in relation to U.S. commitment to the Genocide Convention? How do we ensure the U.S. upholds international law surrounding protection of refugees and right of return? How do we support the work of UNRWA through policy and law? Agnes Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International: - “After more than four months of conflict, Israel’s campaign of retaliation against Hamas has been characterized by a pattern of war crimes and violations of international law.” - “Israel forcibly displaced Palestinians, imposing conditions that have left hundreds of thousands without basic human necessities. It has carried out indiscriminate, disproportionate, and direct attacks on civilians and “civilian objects,” such as schools and hospitals.” - “Today’s diplomatic complicity in the catastrophic human rights and humanitarian crisis in Gaza is the culmination of years of erosion of the international rule of law and global human rights system.” - “Israel’s massive bombardment of Gaza has roots that go deeper in history than the long running “war on terror,” including the 1948 expulsion of roughly 750,000 Palestinians from their homes, which came to be known as the nakba, or catastrophe.” Read on. The Technical Assistance Unit (TAU) - Support to the Criminal Justice Reform in Ethiopia Programme, funded by the European Union 🇪🇺 and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) International Services-led consortium with DCAF - Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, works with the criminal justice institutions to empower Ethiopian citizens by promoting understanding of fundamental rights. As we continue to explore fundamental rights in Ethiopia, let's delve into the Right to Freedom of Expression. This right ensures that citizens have the power to: 💡 Freely express their ideas and opinions: Whether through speech, writing, art, or any other form of communication, individuals have the right to share their perspectives without fear of censorship or reprisal. ℹ Access information: The right to freedom of expression includes the right to seek, receive, and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers. This right is essential to promote diverse viewpoints, critical thinking, and enable citizens to participate actively in their communities. Let's work together to ensure that this fundamental right is upheld for all Ethiopians. #EU GIZ Ethiopia and Djibouti #CriminalJusticeReform #Ethiopia #Justice4All #CriminalJustice #Reform #TechnicalAssistance #LegalReform #RuleOfLaw #HumanRights #AccessToJustice #JusticeReform #LegalAid #JusticeForAll #UNODC #KnowYourRights #Equality #AccessToJustice #KnowYourRights #Ethiopia #FreedomOfExpression #HumanRights

In a concerning trend, Libya has witnessed a significant decline in human rights and media freedoms in recent years. Journalists and members of civil society are facing persecution for simply exercising their fundamental right to freedom of expression. This oppressive environment is further exacerbated by a lack of accountability for those tasked with upholding the rule of law, creating a culture of impunity. The erosion of these basic rights not only threatens the fabric of democracy but also raises serious concerns about the protection of fundamental liberties in the region. It is imperative to address these issues and work towards safeguarding the rights and safety of all individuals in Libya. Read more: https://buff.ly/4f21HrD

In this article I argue that SADC Secretariat lacks proper institutions that properly represent citizens. Platforms such as the SADC Non-State Actors (NSA) have been criticized for being too elite and excluding critical voices especially from civil society. For example, citizens in SADC cannot turn to a tribunal when they feel violated by their own governments. The SADC tribunal was dissolved in 2012 following pressure from former Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe. In other jurisdictions such as West Africa, citizens can turn to the ECOWAS court of Justice. Having such a mechanism offers a chance to build citizen trust in institutions and help keep excesses of governments in check. https://lnkd.in/e7yHUNNK
