📣 The Working Group on Monitoring Methodologies (#WGMM) has delivered its 2024 report to the European Commission on monitoring the use of CO2 neutral fuels (#CNFs) in road transport. 🤝 This group, of which Eurogas is a participant, is the result of collaboration and innovation between over 50 experts from the whole automotive and fuel value chain, including trade associations, research bodies and, significantly, also OEMs. This wide collaboration ensures that the report accurately reflects the needs of the industry in balancing decarbonisation and competitiveness, and represents a milestone in advancing sustainable transport solutions across Europe. 🔦 Some key highlights from the report: 🔸 Importantly, the report proposes a comprehensive definition of CNFs, covering renewable fuels like #biofuels and #eFuels that meet sustainability criteria under the Renewable Energy Directive. This ensures alignment with EU climate neutrality goals. 🔹 11 technological options to #monitor the use of CNFs were assessed, including solutions such as digital tracking systems, mechanical adaptation of tank fillers, and combined mass balancing with a digital handshake. These options provide robust and verifiable methods for #tracking CNFs through the entire fuel supply chain, also considering the user point of view. 🔸 CNFs are highlighted as a key complement to electrification, offering an additional pathway to decarbonise #roadtransport and accelerate the phase-out of fossil fuels. The recommendations focus on realistic, scalable solutions that integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure. To achieve Net-Zero emissions requires concerted efforts across all sectors, while few sector face higher exposure due to direct emissions or supply chain dependencies. The hard-to-abate sectors like heavy-duty trucks, shipping, aviation, iron and steel, chemicals and petrochemicals have a significant role on energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The decarbonization strategy including policy support, and just transition is critical for a successful energy transition of hard to abate sector. The emission reduction across these sectors is possible only through renewable energy solutions, including direct electrification, bioenergy, & synthetic fuels and implementing carbon capture, utilization, and removal measures. The role of supporting policy development to accelerate decarbonization, such as establishing sector-specific targets, promoting green technologies, and scaling up renewable power supply is crucial for successful energy transition. For successful decarbonization, it becomes imperative for government and companies to regularly assess the readiness of key technological pathways based on the relevance and maturity for emission reductions. I had the honor of participating in the panel discussion, "How Are Hard-to-Abate Industries Evaluating Different Carbon Management Pathways?", during the World Renewable Fuels Conference in Berlin. Key themes we explored included: 🍃The indispensable role of renewable gases, such as biomethane and e-methane, in achieving decarbonization goals with immediate compatibility through existing infrastructure. 🔌The need for completely new ways of doing business as we move beyond the "low-hanging fruit" of energy efficiency and initial electrification efforts. Bold corporate investments and stronger political commitments to regulatory frameworks are now crucial. 📝The importance of GHG Protocol, SBTi and Sustainable Corporate Reporting legislation (like CSRD and CSDDD) for: - Ensuring transparency and credibility in emissions claims. - Establishing comparable reporting frameworks, for consumers, investors and decision-makers. - Building trust and accountability across industries. 🏭The power of collaboration and innovation to drive the transition to a low-carbon economy, with industries working together in clusters to accelerate progress. This event was an incredible opportunity to share ideas and learn from experienced minds across the renewable fuels sector. A big thank you to the organizers and my fellow panelists for such an inspiring and enriching experience. The insights from this experience reinforce the importance of working collectively to achieve net-zero goals. Let’s keep the momentum going! 🌟 #RenewableEnergy #Decarbonization #HardToAbateSectors #Policy #Sustainability #STXGroup #WorldLNGSummit #lng #gas #renewablefuels

Transportation accounts for over 15% of global emissions, making it a significant contributor to climate change. However, the industry is actively working to reduce its carbon footprint. The key strategies involves transitioning from traditional fossil fuels to more sustainable alternatives like batteries and e-fuels. Batteries, particularly in electric vehicles (EVs), have gained traction as a cleaner alternative to internal combustion engines. They store electricity and power the vehicle, emitting no tailpipe emissions during operation. Additionally, e-fuels, produced through processes like electrolysis or biomass conversion, offer a way to utilize renewable energy for transportation without the need for extensive infrastructure changes. Despite these promising developments, there are still barriers to widespread adoption of green transportation technologies. These barriers include high initial costs, limited infrastructure, and consumer reluctance to switch from conventional vehicles. This is where C3 as a solution can help. Aimed at reducing barriers and accelerating the adoption of sustainable transportation technologies. By addressing issues such as cost, infrastructure, and consumer acceptance, C3 can help make green investments more attractive and profitable. Today I attended the launch of the report from the Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) Task and Finish Group which looks at the challenges and solutions needed for CCS including skills. CCS is central to industrial decarbonisation - and this is critical for the UK (and globally) to reach net zero. The event was positive with collaboration a recurring theme. The report itself was collaborative. Led by bp, the Carbon Capture and Storage Association and the ECITB, it had more than 40 industry partners feeding into the findings and proposed solutions. The event took place at CATCH, Stallingborough (the Humber is the largest industrial decarbonisation opportunity in the UK). David Talbot, CEO of CATCH shared the opportunity for the Humber region from CCS and plans for a single skills engagement body that coordinates engagement activities with centres of excellence across the region. Andy Lane, VP of Hydrogen and CCUS, bp and Chair of the CCS Task and Finish Group outlined the three essential elements for CCS to succeed are: Confidence, Continuity and Collaboration. The takeaway that resonated with me is the need to make CCS appealing to new entrants to the industry - and better communicate what is meant by net zero, energy transition and green jobs. Outreach to all communities is so important to inspire and promote this industry to the engineers of the future. Hisham Hamid (CEng) added: "We learn about occupational pathways from our communities." We need to collaborate to reach these communities, better communicate the opportunities and influence the influencers. #CCUS #NetZero #CCS #CarbonCapture Andrew Hockey Maximilian Musing Katie Hedges Sallyann Garrard-Hughes

The UK Government’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (#RTFO) is driving down GHG emissions by promoting the supply of renewable fuels for use in UK transport. Fuel suppliers must meet an obligation using tradable certificates which are awarded for the supply of sustainable renewable fuel. This year, the Department for Transport (DfT), United Kingdom for Transport has rolled out guidance on how Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) are defined and treated under the RFTO. Curious about how RFNBOs fit into the RTFO and how renewable electricity plays a role? Check out our infographic on RFNBO Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF)!
