🎤 Eurogas Secretary General Andreas Guth spoke today at the World Renewable Fuels Conference about scaling up these decarbonising alternatives while also contributing to energy security. 🔎 He addressed the state of government assistance and a pragmatic regulatory framework for #renewable and low-carbon fuels, the gaps between ambition and #funding for these projects, the importance of #technologyneutral solutions in meeting our intermittent climate goals and improving European competitiveness, and the effect of the transition period on costs and complexity. This Conference forms part of the World LNG Summit and Awards, which is a meeting place for the most senior energy leaders from across the global value chain, and portrays the critical role that renewable and low-carbon gaseous fuels will play in delivering energy security, affordability, and sustainability. Urostat's 2023 electricity report shows a significant shift: 44.7% of EU electricity production came from renewable sources, surpassing fossil fuels. Natural gas, coal, and petroleum production all decreased, highlighting Europe's accelerating adoption of renewable #energy and the irreversible shift away from fossil fuels. As #renewables are swiftly outpacing fossil fuels, this points towards a potential global trajectory as governments prioritize clean energy in response to the ongoing climate crisis. A good case for using the existing natural gas pipeline infrastructure to get to net zero faster and much more affordably than the "electrify everything" path.
This article makes a sound argument that Ontario is well positioned to transition smoothly into a sustainable energy future, thanks to extensive #NaturalGas infrastructure ready to deliver low-carbon fuels such as made-in-Ontario renewable natural gas (RNG) now - and hydrogen soon. To achieve #NetZero by 2050, we must accelerate the shift from fossil fuels to #renewables in the global energy mix. Latest International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) report calls for an ambitious deployment of 11.2 TW of renewable energy by 2030—a pivotal milestone to keep the climate goal of 1.5°C within reach. The upcoming 2025 #NDCs 3.0 cycle is a crucial opportunity for countries in this decade to bridge the gap between pledges and action. By aligning NDCs with clear, sector-specific strategies, nations can unlock targeted investments and drive meaningful progress towards a resilient, low-carbon economy. The path to Net Zero by 2050 demands urgent action, with renewable energy at its core. With IRENA calling for an ambitious 11.2 TW of renewables by 2030, the climate goal of 1.5°C is still within reach if we act now. As the 2025 NDCs 3.0 cycle approaches, nations have a crucial opportunity to turn pledges into action by aligning sector-specific strategies and driving targeted investments in the green transition. At Suzlon, we’re committed to scaling renewables to #BeatTheClock by 2030 for a cleaner, more resilient future. Today, the RE100 launches its annual report detailing how member companies are sourcing renewable electricity around the world. 420 companies are now part of RE100, with total electricity consumption higher than France’s. Members reported many new and existing barriers to buying renewable electricity, including limited supply, lack of options, or poor regulation. Some of these barriers are particularly acute in Asia-Pacific, especially the Republic of Korea. Shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy is a significant part of the global transition required to limit the worst effects of climate change. One of my key reads of the year is out! Those of us working on corporate sustainability issues, such as energy procurement, benefit from understanding what actually goes into the #renewable energy claims of global brands. This particular assessment of approximately 400 companies with 100% renewable energy commitments contains at least the the following highlights: 1. This is the first ever year-on-year decrease RE100 has seen in PPAs as a share in its members’ RE procurement (35% in 2021 to 31% in 2022). 2. The initiative has much more Asian flavour, which is a good thing if it simultaneously leads to corporates pushing for policy changes to unlock markets and new RE assets being built. The 10 largest electricity consumers joining the initiative since the 2022 RE100 annual report are headquartered in Asia, and the initiative’s new largest electricity user is a Korean company. The decrease in PPAs was due to the initiative’s growing membership in Asia, where most of the structural barriers still exist. 3. South Korea and Japan are the top two countries where members cite barriers to renewable electricity procurement. These are both 'mission critical' countries for the global power sector decarbonisation thanks to their substantial reliance on fossil energy, while being global manufacturing hubs (ie where companies use a lot of electricity). Great annexes as well containing the procurement constructs per brand and per market. It gives those brands the recognition they deserve and sheds light on those who might still have a way to go. Pleased to see this from yesterday's EU Energy Council: "Different member states insisted that interconnections and well interconnected energy networks were an essential building block to ensure security of supply during the crisis and will be even more so in the years to come." And its not only security of supply - interconnectors also bring the benefits of: 🍃 Renewables integration and optimisation 💶 System efficiency ⏬ Reliability without gas ➗ Resilience and solidarity among European countries
