🚋 Exciting news from Wiener Linien: Vienna’s public transport network is launching a modernisation programme for sustainable mobility. Vienna has big plans: the Austrian capital aims to be climate neutral by 2040, with public transport at the heart of this goal. Expansion and modernisation of services will play a key role in reaching this objective. To achieve this, Wiener Linien is launching a major programme in 2024, with an investment of over 850 million euros, including at least 220 million euros dedicated to maintenance and renovation: 🚋 Vienna has the 𝘀𝗶𝘅𝘁𝗵-𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗺 𝗻𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗹𝗱. 🚇 In 2023, Vienna's 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗺𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝟯𝟴 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀 – a distance equivalent to travelling approximately 2.5 times round the world every single day. It will thus come as no surprise that the project's focus will be the renovation of rail infrastructure, with stations, tunnels, bridges, and signalling systems also due for modernisation. Proud to read about #TravelWise in this interesting #news post from Europe's Rail Joint Undertaking titled "Piecing together the integrated railway puzzle" some citation from the post: "Even when the railway puzzle is complete, #EU-Rail’s work will be far from over. “That’s because the integrated rail network is but one part of a larger, comprehensive transport and mobility system,” remarks Giorgio Travaini. - That system includes not only rail, but also, for example, aviation. Helping to connect the two is the #TravelWise project. Conducted in synergy with the SESAR Joint Undertaking , this flagship project is putting the methodology, roadmap, and technologies in place to facilitate the seamless sharing of traffic information between air and rail operators. “The Travel Wise project exemplifies how collaboration between air and rail sectors can pave the way for a seamless, integrated European transport system,” says Andreas Boschen, #SESARJU Executive Director.

Europe, with its dense metropolitan areas, is ideally positioned to use high-speed rail as the backbone of sustainable mobility. While progress has been made, with about 12,400 kilometers of high-speed rail tracks currently in operation, the network still falls short of reaching its full potential. A particular issue is the lack of cross-border connections and that many metropolitan areas remain poorly linked. According to a Greenpeace analysis, only 27% of possible direct train routes between European cities are currently utilized. Capitalizing on this potential would bring immense economic, environmental, and social benefits. Reducing road congestion alone could save the EU billions annually, while creating direct connections between cities would stimulate regional economies and make travel more accessible to millions. Moreover, this effort is needed if the EU's Green Deal is to succeed, as it helps cut carbon emissions and ensures rail becomes a viable alternative to short-haul flights. One promising solution is the “Metropolitan Network”, which Deutsche Bahn has been advocating together with European rail companies. It aims to connect 230 metropolitan regions and 60% of the European population through high-speed rail networks, resulting in about a doubling of transportation volumes by 2030. A first step has already been taken: Starting with a new timetable in mid-December, Deutsche Bahn will introduce more international train services, such as the new daily direct ICE connection from Berlin via Strasbourg to Paris. In the future, it will be crucial to further harmonize regulations, invest heavily in new rail infrastructure, and standardize systems across countries to create a unified high-speed rail network that serves a unified Europe.

🚄 Accelerating #Railway #Modernization: Key Insights from Minister Georgi Gvozdeykov at Green Transition Forum 4.0 🚄 During the prestigious Green Transition Forum 4.0, Minister of #Transport Georgi Gvozdeykov highlighted the urgent need for Bulgaria to catch up in the development of its railway transport. Recognizing that transport generates a quarter of carbon emissions, Minister #Gvozdeykov emphasized the vital mission to limit this impact through strategic modernization. 🔹 Key Developments: ✅ Bulgaria is harnessing the #Recovery and #Resilience Plan (#RRP) to modernize and digitalize its railway infrastructure. ✅ Contracts have been signed for the production of nine shunting locomotives, boosting the domestic industry. ✅ An ambitious project is underway to introduce seven double-decker trains, with plans to expand to ten. ✅ There are challenges with the delivery of 20 long-distance trains, attributed to delays caused by public procurement appeals. ✅ Investments are also being made in over 100 locomotive assistants and a European traffic management system to enhance operational efficiency. 🔹 Looking Forward: Minister Gvozdeykov stressed the co-development of #automobile and railway #transport, outlining a vision where both modes complement each other without competition. Additionally, about 100 million BGN is set to be invested in charging stations across road infrastructures and along the Black Sea ports, marking a significant step toward greener transport solutions. The forum discussions, centered on green #financing, #agriculture, #transport, #climate, #decarbonization, and #ESG, set the stage for pivotal conversations on shaping a sustainable future.
