"Biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and natural resource shortages will be among the top five global risks in the coming decade. Circularity is a major enabler for combating the decline of species and ecosystems." As the World Circular Economy Forum WCEF starts today, the Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra published a list of leading European companies that are at the forefront of applying circular economy principles. Explore it here: https://lnkd.in/e_yRQysp Four key sectors are responsible for the majority of current biodiversity loss linked to the change in the use of land for harvesting and extraction practices: food and agriculture; buildings and construction; fibres and textiles; and forestry. Sitra has also published a comprehensive handbook for businesses aiming to integrate circular business models into their operations to effectively address biodiversity loss. Here is the link: https://lnkd.in/eQvHKR3D I'm convinced that many startups embracing circularity as a business opportunity will be successful - and we need to support them with time, talent, treasure and ties. #biodiversity #circularity #startups #innovation

In the light of the current events, I like to share some personal reflections on the agri-food system transformation and the state of change. I observe a lot of disappointment and negative sentiment on the outcomes of this year's Biodiversity COP#16 in Cali and the recent Climate COP#29 in Baku. Arguably, the taken decisions and commitments are not the big leaps, which many had expected, and the glass is seen, at best, half empty. While I did not attend those COP meetings, I did attend several other inspiring events in the last months which made me seeing the glass rather half full, looking ahead with quite some optimism. At the GPCA Agri Nutrient conference I had the great pleasure to be part of the innovation competition jury. Listening in to all those exciting ideas to increase resource efficiency, drive soil health, and circular nutrient concepts left me deeply inspired. #agrinutrients #greenfertilizer At the DLD Nature conference I had the great privilege to present the results of our recent BCG – NABU report on the importance and economic benefits of healthy soils. It has been great to see the topic of #SoilHealth becoming more and more acknowledged, getting space on the center stage. It has also been inspiring to see the presentations of all the other courageous speakers, presenting great ideas and projects to change for the better and improve nature and biodiversity. #DLDnature #Biodiversity Similarly, I have been thrilled to give the opening keynote speech at the TUM Agri-food Demo day, again putting soil health at the center stage. Then seeing all the passionate founders and their ideas and innovative concepts, again left me full of optimism. While I witnessed plenty of shaky ideas and start-ups in the hype-years of 19-22, it was astonishing to see many profound ideas and focus on real. Adding to this perspective, I took lots positive vibes from the discussion with VC investors orchestrated by German Agri-Food Society and Nucleus Capital. Driving real change by funding high-impact start-ups is left, right and center in the VC community. #Agri-FoodSystems #AgriTech #FoodTech Lastly, it was very inspiring to get lots of positive feedback and response from the presentation of our recent study "How Agri-PV can boost the transition to Regenerative Agriculture" which we developed together with BayWa r.e.. At had the pleasure to present the study at AgriVoltaics and Solar Form Plus. I personally see huge potential in an increasing interlinkage of agriculture and energy value chains – either by joint use of land for agricultural production and PV or by using novel energy (cover) crops as feedstock for biofuels and –materials. As mankind we need to make sure that every sunbeam which hits agriculture land is used productively, contributing either to photosynthesis, hence biomass production, or generating renewable energy. #RegenerativeAgriculture #Agri-PV #energytransition

🌍 Personal Takeaway from #SundaySeries: Spotlight on Nature 🌿 Resharing this because it’s a topic that hits home. Every Sunday, I make it a point to dive deep into these insights—not just to stay informed, but to look at how we can truly drive action beyond just talking about sustainability. What I love about this edition is how it forces us to think beyond business-as-usual. Yes, there’s real opportunity here—$10.1 trillion in annual business prospects isn’t exactly something you ignore—but it’s more than that. It’s about stepping up and recognizing that the future of our companies and industries depends on how we engage with nature. One thing I’ve realized from working closely with companies like Rimi Baltic Group, Ignitis Group Latvija and CleanR Grupa is that taking action isn’t some PR exercise. It’s about building resilience into your business model—whether that’s through circular economy practices or smart tech investments in agriculture. This isn’t just theory; these are steps we can take right now. Let’s reminds ourselves —nature is the core of our survival and our economic future. The sooner we integrate that into how we do business, the better. #BalticSustainability #LetsDoThis #CollaborateMore
#SundaySeries: Spotlight on Nature 🌿 In the latest report by the World Economic Forum, it’s clear that businesses must urgently shift towards a nature-positive approach to protect ecosystems and unlock new growth opportunities. Here are some key takeaways: 1. Global Nature-Positive Goals: Companies are now being guided by global frameworks like the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD). With nature loss threatening global GDP and the future of ecosystems, businesses need to assess and mitigate their nature-related risks. 2. Biodiversity as Business Opportunity: Beyond just compliance, a nature-positive approach can unlock up to $10.1 trillion in annual business opportunities by 2030. For Baltic companies, this could mean investing in smart technologies, circular models, and sustainable resource management. 3. Case Studies to Inspire: • IKEA is leading by ensuring all wood is sustainably sourced and driving innovation in recyclable materials. • Ørsted integrates biodiversity into offshore wind projects, aiming for a net-positive impact on marine ecosystems. Suggestions for Baltic Organizations: • Assess Nature Dependencies: Understand how your business relies on natural resources and identify where you can reduce negative impacts—whether it’s land use, water consumption, or biodiversity protection. Check out one great local company who helps in this- Ecosoul and our partners EY can help you as well when you need strategic guidance. • Adopt Circular Practices: Explore opportunities for waste repurposing, like turning by-products into inputs for other industries, as Aditya Birla Group has done. And connect with our partner CleanR Grupa who are in frontline of circular economy. Or Schneider Electric when you work in urban areas. • Invest in Innovation: The Baltic region can look to companies like Yara International which supports soil health and farmer prosperity through new technologies. For Baltic agriculture, integrating smart farming solutions and regenerative practices can enhance both yields and sustainability. Our foundational partners Rimi Baltic Group and Ignitis Group are great examples to learn from how to invest in Innovation and definitely recommend to check out AUGA group. 🌍 Let’s continue pushing for a sustainable future where businesses thrive in harmony with nature. Adapt and innovate—nature is the key to resilience. #BalticSustainability #NaturePositive #CircularEconomy #itsTime

🌿 Investing in Life vs. Tech: Nature is All We Need! 🌿 🌱 Investing in nature-based solutions, agriculture, and sustainability across all economic sectors is a better approach than investing in tech, fossil fuels, and even infrastructure without a sustainability/regeneration lens. Check out LAURA ORTIZ MONTEMAYOR article "Investing in life vs. investing in tech: Nature is all we need!", which sheds light on the critical need to prioritize investments in regenerative agriculture and natural systems over tech-centric solutions. At the Regenerative Food Systems Investment Summit, Anne van Leeuwen emphasized the importance of investing in soil, compost, seeds, animals, and people rather than expensive infrastructure. Montemayor argues that #agriculture and #food systems are crucial to our economic relationship with people, social justice, and ecosystems. She criticizes recent ag-tech deals in #LatinAmerica for promoting corporate interests and toxic agrochemicals under the guise of impact investing. By outlining three approaches to agriculture—extractive, sustainable, and regenerative—she advocates for the latter due to its context-specific, ecosystem-restorative nature that promotes social justice and biodiversity. The pitfalls of tech-centric investments, contributing to environmental degradation and social inequities, highlight the need for a paradigm shift from artificial intelligence to ecological intelligence. Montemayor emphasizes recognizing and valuing natural capital, pointing out that regenerative agriculture can be profitable while supporting local communities and restoring ecosystems. Investors must reassess their priorities and support nature-based solutions for sustainable and equitable development. True impact lies in long-term ecological and cultural transformations, moving beyond techno-optimism to achieve collective abundance. 📖 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eNVG-cbQ #Sustainability #RegenerativeAgriculture #ImpactInvesting #NaturalCapital #SocialJustice #EcologicalIntelligence #TechVsNature #InvestInLife
