🕊️ European and World Day Against the Death Penalty 🕊️ Today, we stand united in our unwavering commitment to abolish the death penalty, a practice that represents the ultimate denial of human dignity. We reaffirm our shared values and highlight the joint statement by the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset and Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (European External Action Service), emphasizing our strong opposition to the death penalty in all circumstances. The trend towards abolition is encouraging, with over two-thirds of countries having eliminated the death penalty in law or practice. However, the fight is far from over. In 2023, executions continued in several countries, with Iran accounting for a staggering 74% of all recorded executions. We call upon the few remaining states that still carry out death sentences to introduce a moratorium as a first step toward full abolition. Let us continue to work together to promote a future free from the death penalty! It is time to end this relict of the past and ensure that it has no place in the 21st century.
