Migratory pressure has created an existential dilemma for the Schengen area. The European Union could either take a huge step toward a closer political union, or it could revert to the pre-Schengen state of affairs – although it will most probably carry on muddling through half-heartedly. This year marks the first year of the #2050Strategy Implementation. As host and chair of the upcoming #PIFLM53, there is a lot to look forward to, Tonga! (no pressure) One of the key deliverables I am looking forward to, is the 2050 Baseline Report, which will give us an overall picture of how the region is doing in key areas outlined in the 2050 #ImplementationPlan. This emphasizes the importance of the Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning #MEL mechanism. It underscores the crucial role of investing in our region's national statistical systems. This investment ensures we can collect, analyze, and use quality data to track our progress and meet our goals. #PIFLM53 #Pacific2050 #Tonga
Briefings with Senior government officials continue in #Tonga on #2050Strategy, key regional priorities and preparations towards hosting the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting later in the year. #Pacific2050 #PIFLM53

🇪🇺 How should the EU reform itself internally to prepare for future enlargements? And how should the EU address rising geopolitical tensions outside its borders and strengthen its defence and security capabilities? These are some of the questions that European affairs ministers discuss today at the General Affairs Council, chaired by the Belgian Minister for European Affairs. 1/3 How should the EU reform internally to be ready for future enlargements? Ministers address this question today as they look at the future of Europe when it comes to policies and communication thereof. 2/3 EU ministers prepare the summit of the prime ministers and presidents taking place this Thursday and Friday in Brussels. The summit will address important topics such as Ukraine, security and defence, the Middle East, EU enlargement, migration and agriculture. 3/3 Ministers discuss the coordination of socio-economic policies within the EU for the next 12 months. This coordination exercise, known as the European Semester, takes place every year and ensures that national policies are in line with the EU rules and objectives. #EU2024BE 🇪🇺🇧🇪

In my latest piece for Strategic Analysis Think Tank I examine the national and regional consequences of the July 2024 Government reshuffle in #Montenegro 🇲🇪. Several key takeaways from the text. - This is the latest piece in a puzzle of political instability in 🇲🇪, with possibly many more to come. - No. 1 challenge to the Government per se is the division of labor between Ministries with almost the same name (i. e. Ibrahimović, Ivanović, and Gorčević Ministries). - The future stability and longevity of this Government depends heavily on the leadership and character of PM Spajić and the relations within the coalition. - Lastly, as obvious as it may be, the bilateral issues with 🇭🇷 will dominate the foreign policy of 🇲🇪. More bellow. ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/epz6MFtc

Amid the #Israel-#Hamas war and #Russia’s invasion of #Ukraine, North African governments have demonstrated that there is opportunity in crisis. “The North African political classes have certainly won a series of important medium-term victories off the back of global disasters. However, Europe should not assume that increasing transactional dealings with these elites will produce stability on its southern frontier. As crises expand, it remains doubtful that these regimes have forged the legitimacy or the longer-term strategies necessary to withstand civil unrest,” explain Alia Brahimi and Karim Mezran. Read their take on how North African governments have used global crises to revive their faltering rule ⬇️
