The recent article in ScienceDaily on managing forests with smart technologies highlights the transformative potential of innovation in addressing deforestation. At Deadwood Innovations, we are at the forefront of this movement by utilizing advanced technology to convert underutilized aspen trees into high-quality hardwood. However, it is shortsighted to think that there is any one technology, practice, or method that will be a complete solution for sustainability, economy, and industry. It will take new technologies, like Deadwood’s, to work alongside and complement the forest industry to help producers unlock value and create sustainability. https://lnkd.in/gvybuCyz #SustainableForestry #ClimateAction #Innovation #DeadwoodInnovations #CanadaForestry #GreenFuture

I'm excited to announce a partnership with Indian Geospatial Solutions Company ‘Bhuh Pramaan’, that will redefine remote sensing for #earthobservation (EO) as a tool used for measuring and verifying the uptake of CO2 by soils made healthier -by encouraging small holder farmers to adopt more natural farming practices. Our collaboration with Bhuh Pramaan, has been aimed at ensuring the building of something that 'will' just work flawlessly from the start. This statement of intent is made, because the carbon credit scandal of 2023, clearly showed that a new approach in remote sensing verification of nature-based carbon credits is needed. The established carbon credit regulatory and monitoring players, who have contributed to the growth of carbon credits today, are essential, and, have done much brilliant work since last year, to better integrate the adoption of EO remote sensing for verification of CO2 sequestered and mitigated in nature based carbon credits. But it's time for a bit of change, to create some balance in the carbon credit markets, especially for small-holder farmers, and tackle how to allocate funding from carbon credit sales, to those who are actually responsible for CO2 sequestration, not just those who are managing the programs. More needs to be done, in ensuring that Indias small holder farmers, are not only integrated into the worlds carbon credit markets, but that they receive ‘the majority’ of revenues from the sale of nature based carbon credits. Life is already tough for small holder farmers, struggling to get paid more for producing cleaner foods. More needs to be done, especially in the space of verifying using EO remote sensing, the amounts of methane been released, through adopting such practices that involve reverting back to paddy farming methods employing alternate wet drying, or direct seed drilling. So I look forward to making some further announcements about this partnership over the coming weeks, that will redefine EO remote sensing as a tool for quantifying and validating the absorption of atmospheric CO2 into soils, that overtime will become healthier via encouraging more small holder farmers to embrace the older, more 'natural ways' of farming. It was welcome news this weekend, to see so many satellites launched, with varying sensor types, all focused on watching the health of planet earth from its biomass to the atmosphere to the oceans. Some of those satellites undoubtedly are going to help the existing carbon credit regulators, enhance the way in which CO2 and methane emissions are monitored. A lot more satellites, built more cost effectively, operated more efficiently are going to be needed. Much higher resolution in sensors, especially Synthetic Aperture Radar systems with L-band are going to be needed. I look forward to sharing how IcesteinX, is going to be a part of helping drive that over the next couple of weeks 🌾🛰🇮🇳 www.icesteinx.org #earthobservation #remotesensing #soil #CO2

Tracking Soil Carbon with Satellites & AI Carbon credits are currently the subject of heated debate, especially following the October collapse of one of the world’s largest offset experiments, the Zimbabwe Kariba project. https://lnkd.in/dXN94mWm Enter Boomitra, an agricultural technology startup that’s rethinking how we track CO2 beneath the Earth’s surface. https://boomitra.com/ Measuring, reporting, and verifying credits, or what’s known as MRV, requires farmers to manually collect continuous data on their land to measure levels of carbon in the soil over time. With the time and effort this takes, farmers may skip the “convoluted, burdensome and unpredictable” carbon offset process altogether. Overall, the system “has proven difficult and nuanced,” says Columbia Climate School’s State of the Planet. https://lnkd.in/dMHyme3s Remote monitoring could cut the cost of measuring soil carbon by more than 90%. Boomitra integrates “an archive of [more than a million] soil samples” and imagery from 100+ multispectral satellites to accurately model 5 million acres of global crop and farmland. The startup’s machine learning models then analyze levels of carbon in the soil over time, helping farmers qualify for third-party-verified carbon credits. Meanwhile, farmers can use Boomitra’s app to track critical soil markers like moisture and nutrients. Remote monitoring is a little bit like a jigsaw puzzle, in which you fit together different pieces of information to see the full picture, but it could cut the cost of measurement, Boomitra claims, by more than 90%. The startup, which works with partners like the World Economic Forum, AWS, and Mercy Corps, sends income from selling these credits back to its network of 150,000 farmers and ranchers. It’s not just about tech: Interestingly, Moorthy makes the case that scaling Boomitra’s solution isn’t just a technological change — it’s psychological. For farmers living on the brink, after all, a single setback can have devastating effects. Moorthy recalls being particularly struck by the funeral of a farmer who, after losing everything during monsoon season, took his own life. Boomitra is just one of a growing array of startups using data to help farmers adapt to changing crop yields, temperatures, and growing seasons. By 2027, the market for precision agriculture is predicted to surpass $14 billion. Meanwhile, farmers can use Boomitra’s app to track critical soil markers like moisture and nutrients.
