❓Do you want businesses to prioritize animal welfare in their operations? During this proxy season, more than 40 shareholder resolutions have been or are planning to be filed to address animal safety at companies. Consumers and shareholders are more aware of the animal cruelty that goes on in animal factories, which is 99% of the animal foods on the market. Now it seems that consumers are realizing the power of their voice combined with their dollars, working through shareholder engagement to push for more humane practices. Animal-welfare resolutions have historically failed to get much backing. “Proposals, going back to 2015, have received average shareholder support of 11.3%, well below the 30.4% average for all proxy votes over the same time period,” mentioned Rob Du Boff, CFA, senior ESG analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence. According to a recent Bloomberg article, a shareholder recommendation filed two years ago with Papa John’s International Inc. garnered among the highest backing of any animal-welfare resolution since 2015, at 41.8%. We are excited to see the growing concern among investors for animal welfare. At VegTech Invest, our publicly traded ETF focuses on ❌ removing animals from the supply chain for clean, cruelty-free foods. 🐄 According to YourStake, our investments are 4.04x more impactful at reducing animal suffering than diet alone. Impact investing can make a tremendous difference for the animals and we are happy to see the rising shareholder engagement surrounding animal welfare. The results from our trial on AI-powered email outreach for animal advocacy are honestly mind-blowing 🤯 It only cost us 6 cents per email and we estimate it saved 25-98 animals per dollar spent. For less than $50, we secured 6 soft commitments and 2 firm commitments from restaurants to expand their vegan offerings, we had an Assemblyman draft a bill for tax incentives for vegan businesses, a State Representative give their support for plant-based lunches in schools and a financial institution request a detailed report on integrating animal welfare into ESG metrics. Most importantly though, this system is built to learn, adapt and improve its outreach over time. We expect the performance of this AI-powered system will double within the next year.

Some 93% of global food giants have been given the lowest ratings (‘E’ or ‘F’) based on their performance impact in the latest Business Benchmark on Animal Welfare (BBAW) report. Abigail Herron, Global Head of Health and Nature Policy at Aviva Investors, said: "The BBAW continues to be a valuable guide in helping investors analyse management quality systematically and consistently across the global food industry. Importantly, this data also exists at the intersection between critical issues including animal welfare and antimicrobial resistance, which present material financial risks to companies and shareholder returns." The European Commission has just published the answers of the candidate for European Commissioner for Animal Health and Welfare, Olivér Várhelyi, to written questions. On 6 November, there will be a hearing in the European Parliament where the Commissioner-designate will answer questions on various issues related to his new role, including animal welfare. Some of the questions will be sent to the candidate in written form before the hearing. Other questions will be asked orally during the session. In his answers, candidate Várhelyi promised to work on “policies [that] leave no one behind, creating conditions for truly inclusive health and animal welfare systems catered fairly to the needs of people and animals”. While we welcome the commitment to modernise animal welfare legislation in line with the latest scientific evidence, the responses are not ambitious enough and leave out some important points, including: ⏰ A clear timeline for the review of the legislation, including the long-promised ban on cages 🐟 Species-specific legislation that takes into account currently forgotten species, such as aquatic animals, dairy cows and broilers 🦊 A ban on fur farming and imports 🐭 Plans for a transition to non-animal science 🐶 Actions to tackle the illegal pet trade 🦎 The introduction of an EU-wide positive list 🫸 Ensuring that animal welfare standards apply to imported products 🍽️ Plans to make healthy, sustainable diets more available, accessible and affordable for all More details here: https://bit.ly/3YvwmHn Now that ‘animal welfare’ has finally been added to the Commissioner's title, it is time to give this issue the importance and attention it deserves. Although we expected more from the candidate Commissioner, there is still hope to get answers to our questions. We call on MEPs to represent the demands of citizens and demand specific answers during the hearing. Stay tuned for more information on how you can help us in this process.

The Olympic Games have commenced. The organisers ignored our plea, and that of tens of thousands of concerned citizens globally, and refused to remove foie gras from the menu. This is a reminder of EXACTLY what we’re up against as animal activists. Industries and organisations that will dig their heels in, put their fingers in their ears, and close their eyes, all to protect their reputation and profits. But our purpose is far greater. Our purpose is to protect animals✊🏼 In a single month, Animal Equality’s global team: 🤍Garnered coverage in some of the most important international media outlets on the issue, including Le Monde, Forbes, Vanity Fair, the Mirror and the Independent. We shone a light on the plight of farmed animals and encouraged people to ditch animal products from their diet 🤍Secured 75,000 signatures on our petition 🤍Mobilised our supporters to send 15,000 emails to organisers 🤍Stormed social media, encouraging chefs to publicly denounce foie gras 🤍Received widespread support from dozens of Olympic athletes, conservationists, vets, academics, and fellow NGOs 🤍And we took to the streets of Paris to visit the Olympic Organising Committee’s HQ personally and project our message all across the city Our work is far from over. We will continue our fight to eradicate foie gras made by force-feeding, and put a stop to this awful industry once and for all. And there’s not a moment to lose! That’s why today Animal Equality UK is featured in The Express revealing our latest poll results showing that nearly nine in ten Brits are in favour of a ban on the importation of foie gras made by force-feeding. The animals need us to give this our all, and that’s certainly what we’ll keep doing🖤 https://lnkd.in/enp_n9aD

Today is #NationalAnimalRightsDay, and some of the more popular restaurant chains in North Dakota are under fire for how the meats they use are produced, including the local environmental impacts. Fast-food chains, like Subway and Taco Bell, are listed in a new report from the group Animal Equality, which says these restaurants are lagging behind others in ending the use of gestational crates for pregnant pigs. The authors say these animals are raised in extremely close confinement, with bars pressed against their skin. Devon Dear, Ph.D., institutional outreach manager with Animal Equality, said it also ties into broader health issues linked with factory farms. "When you have this many animals in one place, you're getting really high concentrations of feces, and you're having all of the environmental impacts of this. I mean, pigs produce a ton of waste, and this has to be disposed of properly to not make nearby communities sick," she said. The report says certain chains, such as McDonald's and The Wendy's Company, have made progress toward healthier supply-chain practices. However, more than a dozen others highlighted in the findings have not. Eleven states have banned the use of gestational crates, but #NorthDakota isn't among them. Some of the restaurant chains couldn't be reached for comment. As for other environmental impacts, Dear said the stress placed on these animals creates a ripple effect that goes beyond their well-being. "And more stress means more antibiotics. More and more antibiotics means, you know, higher chances of antibiotic-resistant germs coming into the environment," Dear continued. The organization also cites public opinion data from World Animal Protection. In its survey, 80% of U.S. consumers said they were concerned about the treatment of factory-farmed pigs.
