Tomorrow marks the start of the 13th installment of Dota 2's The International (TI 13). The International has long been known as one of the most prestigious esports tournaments, setting a new standard for prize pools in gaming (or esports scene in general). It was the first game to offer over a million dollars in prize money. In Indonesia, Dota 2 played a pivotal role in defining the early esports landscape, alongside games like CS:GO, long before Mobile Legends became the dominant force. The game was incredibly fun, and working in its esports scene became one of my dreams. With the surge in popularity of MOBA games like Mobile Legends, Arena of Valor (AoV), and League of Legends: Wild Rift (and now, Honor of Kings), you’d expect Dota 2 to benefit from this growing interest in the genre. Unfortunately, the game has become increasingly complex for new players, and the current players aren't exactly friendly to newer ones (there might be some though). But I get it—the fading interest in the game and the influx of newer titles don’t bring in the money for sponsors, teams, and organizers. The scene feels like an exclusive club with limited entry, where not everyone can understand what’s happening on the screen. Today, the player base has stagnated. We’re just waiting for updates every couple of weeks, hoping that the next match won’t be ruined by toxic behavior or players giving up over the most random minor stuff in-game. What was once the highlight of my year, hyping up for TI, has lost its spark. Events like the Riyadh Masters (and the Esports World Cup) seem to be overshadowing The International. So, where does that leave us? With no significant marketing (even @wykrhm posts more than the official Dota social media accounts), no new players, and no minor & even micro tournaments for the growth of local competitive scenes, the game feels like it’s in a state of limbo. We’re just biding our time, waiting for the next big thing that may never come. I’ll still be rooting for Ame and hoping that XG takes home the championship at this year’s TI though.

Evo 2024 was one of the biggest esports events of all-time!  More than 10,000 competitors showed up to compete, making it the largest Evolution Championship Series ever, and the biggest esports event ever in terms of active players.  Our team was on-the-ground covering the event and gathering interviews for an upcoming special project in collaboration with Cash App.  🕹 The main event this year was Street Fighter 6. And on Sunday night, Punk stood above them all as the second-ever SF6 Evo world champion 🎮 Arslan Ash dominated the biggest Tekken tournament in history, triumphing over 4,646 players as the first ever Tekken 8 Evo world champion 🕹 The main takeaway with Evo is always a constant: this is a massive, diverse audience of incredibly passionate fans. No matter what esports looks like in the future, the Fighting Games Community is going to be a big part of it In other news, the International Olympic Committee announced the creation of the Olympic Esports Games recently.  🎮 The first installment of the games will take place in 2025 but what we don’t know yet is what games will be featured 🕹 The IOC has been testing gaming since 2018 and hosted an esports week last year, but they didn’t feature any of the major esports titles 🎮 The big takeaway here is a big investment from a large traditional sports body in esports and gaming going forward. WHAT IS GOING WRONG WITH GLOBAL ESPORTS? Despite having a decent run at Convergence 2023 with SKrossi,t3xture and Monyet leaving the Team and Russ,Benkai,Polvi,blaZek1ng,Bazzi joining the club with lightningfast. Which made Indian fans think this just might be the season they were waiting for!!!! But as the VCT Pacific Split 1 started with a loss against Zeta Division which made the fans quite flabbergasted and dissapointed with the results, Global Esports bounced back with a victory over Eldiablo's "BLeed" which again made the fans think that is this the season?. The Answer, NO. Global Esports then ended their VCT Pacific Split 1 season in the next match itself with a loss against Zeta Division which deafeated them earlier too. With a New,fresh and promising team fans were waiting for a season where GLobal Esports would DOMINATE!!. As the VCT Madrid Season ended it was time for VCT Pacific Split 2 to be started. with high hopes and support Global Esports entered the erena against the team that made them end their Split 1 journey "ZETA DIVISION". The match began with a Easy map victory for Zeta Division at Sunset with a scoreline of 1-13, this made a tragic impact on the fans but happily not on the team as they went on to win the next map which was "ICEBOX" with a scoreline of 13-10, we saw some phenominal shots and plays done by Lightningfast in this map which helped GLobal Esports get this map win, but the misplays in the next map made them loose the decider which was "ASCENT" with a scoreline of 8-13, the next matches of Global Esports which were against DRX and Talon had a similar pattern to it in which Global Esports was unable to secure even a map victory!!!!. 🌍 Riot Games Expands to MENA, Allowing League of Legends and TFT at Saudi Esports World Cup Riot has announced its plans to expand its presence in the region, including allowing League of Legends (LoL) and Teamfight Tactics (TFT) to participate in the upcoming Esports World Cup (EWC) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. While Riot has clarified these events are not "official" LoL Esports events, they see value in supporting the growth of esports globally. “The decision to make room in our LoL Esports competitive calendar for the EWC comes after a lot of consideration about our duty to thoughtfully explore marketing and commercial opportunities for esports teams and players, as well as the impact this event can have on players in MENA.“ Back in 2019, Riot Games had stated that they wished to localize League of Legends for the MENA region by adding Arabic language to the game and creating new servers, and the EWC provides them with the opportunity to do just that. Can teams outshine their esports titles? 🌟 Recently, the RLCS 2024 World Championship viewership statistics caught our eye: the playoffs match between G2 Esports Stride and Karmine Corp was the most popular game of the event, achieving over 100,000 more concurrent viewers than the event’s ultimate grand finals. Usually, we expect viewership to steadily increase throughout the playoffs stage, but sometimes, the event record happens during earlier matches. This phenomenon isn't new to esports and happens across multiple scenes. For instance, MOONTON GAMES Mobile Legends: Bang Bang matches usually have higher peaks before the finals at world championship events thanks to match-ups that represent both the game’s Indonesian and Filipino audiences. Counter-Strike’s peaks were largely due to popular teams coming together (i.e. Natus Vincere + FURIA), whereas Sentinels alone were able to fuel Valorant viewership, as the red organization outgrew the NA Valorant scene. However, competitiveness can be just as important as popularity. G2 Esports vs T1 Entertainment & Sports was not the Grand Final at Worlds 2019, but these two were accepted as the world’s best by many fans, and their match outperformed the Final by 7%. As always, the industry is innovating and changing. #Overwatch is opening up its ecosystem, and 15+ esports titles are joining forces in the Esports World Cup, promising an exciting summer of esports. Behind the scenes, a lot has happened on the data, betting and broadcasting side as well. The viewership experience of esports has seen new innovations with BLAST, FaceIT Watch and co-streaming. Uptime and other product metrics have also improved in esports betting, not the least with Abios' 87% uptime, elevating fans' user experience. Last but not least, all eyes are still on Brazil.
