Some things were just Born to be Cool! Beginning with the successful contract bid in June 1946, the B-52 "Stratofortress" moniker is rarely used; informally, this aircraft is more commonly referred to as simply the "BUFF" (Big Ugly Fat F____ (...Fella). The B-52A first flew in 1954. A total of 744 B-52s were built, with the last, a B-52H, delivered in October 1962. It's sixty-two years old today.... thank you MAINTENANCE! During Desert Storm, B-52s delivered 40 percent of all the weapons dropped by coalition forces. Today, Pilots wear night vision goggles to enhance their vision during night operations. The longest distance flown for a combat mission involving a 34-hour, 16,000-statute-mile round trip from Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana. The Air Force currently expects to operate B-52s through 2050. It is unparalleled in All of Aviation, and is on track to become the first and potentially Ever(!), Centurion. Current Active force inventory, 58 (test, 4); ANG, 0; Reserve, 18. I give you, the B-52 BUFF!
