Evan Shapīro’s Post

Defying Gravity “The U.S. economy exceeded expectations for the month, adding 254,000 jobs in September, but the entertainment industry continued its steady decline, shedding positions in film, broadcasting, and content production.” https://lnkd.in/ef5jvDUr Things continue to be bad in Media. For a while I’ve been warning you that things will only get worse before they get better. So, WHY is Media Industry employment moving in the opposite direction of the rest of the American economy? And what TF can we do about it? I offer deep cuts on both topics in this interview: https://bit.ly/ESHAPTHR And, for those most adversely affected by the current chaos, I provide a panoply of links and actions to help survive, and maybe even thrive, here: https://lnkd.in/eaQGW3dq The cure for our industry depends on us all to finally stop following the leaders who got us here and start listening to our audiences. The first step to finding your path out of this darkness is to realize that the only light you really need comes from within you - but only if you look for it. We ARE all in this together. But this shit ain’t gonna fix itself, and new opportunities are NOT going to come looking FOR YOU. So much of what we all did for a living was easier than it should’ve been, for too long. That time is over. It’s time to wake up stupid everyday, and teach ourselves how to remake the industry and the careers we all deserve.

.... and the only people who seem to be talking about this are the people in the industry (or adjacent industries) being affected by it. The rest of the nation seems to think that everyone "in Hollywood" is so wealthy that it just doesn't matter. Dare I say there may be some Schadenfreude? I honestly believe that if this kind of devastation within an industry were happening to those in trucking or food packaging or car making, it would be on every news feed every day. Makes me crazy.

This cuts deep Evan because it's the only way out. I'm glad you're saying it as how we job search, how we think about work and where you go next, are in your control vs. waiting for someone to offer up an opportunity - as that next opportunity is probably not landing in anyones lap. "We ARE all in this together. But this shit ain’t gonna fix itself, and new opportunities are NOT going to come looking FOR YOU. So much of what we all did for a living was easier than it should’ve been, for too long. That time is over."

I just checked: viewing of The Penguin episode 1 on HBO in first 4 days = 5.3m viewers (USA). Top 25 recaps of The Penguin Ep1 on Youtube = 5m impressions (Global) . 'The Critical Drinker' alone has 1.1m impressions on Ep1. Thats a guy with a camera, a laptop and a mic.

I have been remaking myself for a year and a half and every single day I learn something new. This should not be a lesson to anyone. When we stop learning, we die.

The fact of the matter is that the industry is fleeing because executives think that it costs huge amounts of money to deliver quality IP. However, they don't understand the emergence of ultra light Virtual Production and AI pipelines that are craftsperson focused and able to deliver significantly higher ROI. It's almost like we're in Detroit and the work is being outsourced and we've got the ability to make high volume daily drivers with small, skilled teams. The studio that figures out how to flip the switch will be the studio that starts to generate the real returns.

A good point made. The U.S. film industry is suffering from a lack of evolution. All industries must evolve to survive. Look at the global film industries, they are thriving and growing, Why the difference? The evidence suggests that film makers in foreign countries found what makes movies attractive and sell, tell original stories that the local population relates to. This is a hope for the U.S. film industry, in that film markets, as with any other industry, must continuously expand. Also, stop the "it's only Hollywood" as if the entire film industry depended only on what happens in Hollywood. Be diverse and inclusive. Georgia and New Mexico are healthy signs of competition, as are foreign film markets. Evolve and grow is essential for industries, as it is for individuals.

We’ve been building the #Film3 business model for close to 4 years. (I spoke in a panel with you about it two years ago). The model has been proven. Now we must keep educating.
