It is my pleasure to announce that DMUN Foundation has been officially invited by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to participate as an observer in the 12th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC). This critical conference will address some of the most pressing issues, including combating human trafficking, tackling illicit manufacturing and trafficking of firearms, and advancing international cooperation to fight transnational organized crime. We’re proud to bring the voice of youth to this high-level forum and push for meaningful engagement on global crime prevention efforts. Youths are one of the key stakeholder groups most vulnerable to crime, and it is fitting that we play an active role in combating such criminal activity. The DMUN Foundation will always fight for meaningful youth participation, child rights, and safety of children and youths across the UN and the UN System. We need systemic change in international policy, and youths need to be at the forefront of this movement. #UNODC #TransnationalOrganizedCrime #UNTOC #GlobalGovernance #YouthInAction #SustainableDevelopment #SDGs #GlobalYouth #YouthLeadership #HumanRights #CrimePrevention #InternationalRelations #YouthEmpowerment #CivilSociety #HumanTrafficking #FirearmsControl #IllicitTrade #ViennaConference #YouthVoices #Leadership #GenderEquality #SDG5 #EndTrafficking #WomenEmpowerment #GlobalChange #Diplomacy #UNConference #UnitedNations #YouthParticipation #InternationalCooperation #PeaceAndSecurity #YouthAdvocacy #GlobalImpact #DMUNFoundation #YouthForPeace #ObserverRole #Agenda2030 #SustainableFuture #ConferenceOfParties #PolicyChange #CivilSocietyEngagement #YouthPolicy #HumanSecurity #GlobalAction #FutureLeaders #YouthEngagement #StrongerTogether #VoiceForChange #InternationalDialogue #UNEvents #UNHQ #GlobalChallenges #YouthPerspective

"Imagine a finger gently stroking the face of an injured person. The act appears compassionate, better than nothing and worth continuing. But pull back the camera to recognize the violent bigger picture and the finger stroking the face belongs to a body that, with the other hand, is strangling the person lying on the ground. Aid is not separate from the totality of the relationship between the global north and the global south that adheres to a violent system." "International aid is itself a reformist reform that increases the budget for and footprint of coloniality—at the expense of justice. What is needed in the international context is an abolitionist strategy. Abolitionist reforms in the international context refer to the incremental steps toward dismantling systemic injustice internationally and eliminating the suffering that is used as the justification for intervention by aid actors in the first place." Really appreciate this fresh perspective on international aid and development. Critiques have been around for decades and yet efforts to create real systemic change are either unsupported or co-opted by the big players in the industry.
#MustRead from Nora Lester Murad: "[Aid actors] will defend their motives, despite knowing that impact matters regardless of intentions. Some will cling to the pragmatic view that there must be something of value that can be salvaged from the aid system given all the resources that are invested in it. Discounting how the system promotes the well-being of some at the expense of others, they will point out that some have benefitted. They will argue that even if aid as a tool is infected with coloniality, rich actors cannot use that fact to shirk responsibility to promote the right to development for others. This is internally logical, but it does not hold up when juxtaposed to abolitionist logic." #InternationalAid #GlobalDevelopment #GlobalDev #InternationalDevelopment #AidReform #HumanitarianAid #Humanitarianism #NGOs

This afternoon, GlobalAustin, in partnership with the Institute of International Education, is virtually hosting an #IVLP delegation from Syria for a project titled “Preventing and Confronting Domestic Abuse and Violence.” During their time here, the delegation will be impacting the community by: • Reviewing best practices for preventing gender-based violence; • Discussing techniques to identify forms of gender-based abuse, report abuse, prosecute abusers, and provide assistance and protection to victims of gender-based violence; • Improving understanding about how social developments, such as economic opportunities, education, entrepreneurship, political participation, and leadership, can serve as tools for combating violence; and • Examining education and outreach initiatives which focus on women’s legal rights, the responsibility of men and boys to avoid perpetuating gender-based violence, and combating trafficking in persons. #ExchangesImpact #ExchangeMatters #IVLPCommunity #IAmDiplomacy #CitizenDiplomacy #PublicDiplomacy

Improvement of #Peacebuilding in #Iraq and #Community #Engagement One would want the peace in Iraq to be multi-dimensional in nature. It would have to be top-down as well as grassroots peace-building community engagement. Some of the major strategies that may be adopted are: 1. Community-Based Peacebuilding: * Grassroots Initiatives: Encourage and support local organizations to embark on peacebuilding programs that tackle specific needs and concerns of their communities. * Conflict Resolution Training: Train members of the community in conflict resolution methods, mediation, and negotiation. * Interfaith Dialogue: Encourage dialogue and mutual understanding of people from different faiths for improving peaceful coexistence and tolerance. 2. Inclusive Governance: * Participatory Decision Making: Give the communities a say in all the decision making at different levels that impact peacebuilding and development. * Decentralization: Give the local governments more power and autonomy to effectively respond to the needs and aspirations of their local communities. Accountability: Good governance that allows accountability and transparency in government would instill trust between the people and the state. 3. Economic Development and Job Creation: Sustainable Livelihoods: Encourage livelihood opportunities that are sustainable and long-lasting, especially in conflict-affected areas. Youth Employment: Provide jobs to young people in order to bring down unemployment and influence them against becoming violent. Infrastructure Development: Invest in infrastructure projects to allow connectivity and better economic opportunities. 4. Education and Social Cohesion: Inclusive Education: Quality education is given to all children, regardless of background or ethnicity. Cultural Exchange Programs: Cultural exchange programs would help bridge the gap in understanding between different communities. Youth Empowerment: Investing in activities that would empower young people to be responsible and active citizens for change. 5. Security Sector Reform: • Rule of Law: Entrench the rule of law; ensure security forces respect human rights. • Community Policing: Community policing should be implemented in which communities can trust security forces. • DDR: Support programs for the reintegration into society of former combatants. These stats are concerning- twice as many women were killed in conflicts in 2023 than in 2022 and a 50% jump in #CRSV. It will be interesting to see where, why and how implementation of #WPS has diluted? What are the variables that are allowing this defacto rollback of these hard-fought and hard-won rights for women in conflict and post conflict societies? Thanks Eleanor Gordon for sharing your learnings from the #UNSC #WPS open debate.

Fantastic to be at #UNSC #WPS Open Debate today. Stand out message from #Canada - we must ‘not be suffocated by negativity’ but take inspiration from the many young women engaged in efforts to advance peace, security, justice. #UNSG Report highlights #women even less involved in #peace processes, twice as many women died in conflicts in 2023 than 2022 & #CRSV increased by 50% - underscoring need more than ever for #politicalwill & #implementation as underscored by #Germany - ‘it is neither knowledge nor awareness that is missing’ Monash Global Peace and Security (GPS) Centre Llani "LJ" Kennealy
