Teaching English literature in conservative schools in the Middle East can be such a challenge. The majority of the novels that kids read and teachers teach in the west are a huge no bueno out here, which can make the life of a English teacher all the more challenging. We recently interviewed a fantastic teacher who recommended this book, and it has completely burst open the doors to ideas and ways to engage kids in reading. I've always been a huge advocate that children should be able to see themselves in the books that they read and media that they cosume. So I'm hoping that this will be a bit of game changer for the 24/25 academic year and that it will encourage students to love reading. Which novels do you teach that have engaged students in the Middle East? 📚 #english #englishliterature #InternationalTeacher #bsme https://lnkd.in/e6schZdv

When your usual co-workers include an apathetic adolescent cat, a needy border collie and a home schooling teen, it’s super fun to work as part of a large project team from time to time. Jo Harrison brought together a pool of talented writers for this intense and time sensitive local government website project. As well as contributing to the migration, structural editing and general content facelift of hundreds of web pages, my role was to keep a keen eye on consistency across accessible content and inclusive language. This was particularly important when updating content about programs and services for people with disability, family violence survivors, LGBTIQA+ youth and First Nations communities within the municipality. On spotting an issue, I’d raise it with the client to share my take. I'd determine their position and then develop an agreed style. Finally, I’d add the language or accessibility update to a live style sheet to guide the writing team. This also proved useful for the client’s in-house teams, with the project lead sharing some of my style solutions at a national conference. Thanks, Jo, for the opportunity to be part of this project and for such a great review. If you want to be like Jo and tap into my radar for kind and careful content, get in touch. There is a website I started over a decade ago when I knew nothing about SEO or how to rank on Google search results. I made many mistakes. As I learned, my gut told me to scrap the website and start over. I resisted because I didn't want all my hard work to go to waste (I have hundreds of articles on there). But the website was not getting the traffic it should despite the exceptional feedback I was getting from readers who did indeed find my articles. So.....I finally did it. I started over. FruitfullyWomen.com is my new site and with less than three weeks old, and only eight articles on there so far, I am already ranking on Google. I am not on the first page where I need to be, but I am getting there. I predict that in about a month, I will be surpassing the traffic from my old site. Sometimes, you just have to embrace failure, learn from your mistakes, and start over. https://lnkd.in/g--DWQQz #seo #writing #Christianwriters #selfpublishing

The words we use matter. They matter more to those who are from minority communities. We all talk about 'being more accessible & inclusive', but how do we speak & write in that way? Ettie might have the answer. Check out Bold Type for a course on accessible & inclusive copywriting & content creation! https://lnkd.in/eJ_Ygvni

Sign up NOW for our virtual write-ins! You can attend every session or pick the times and dates that work best for you. Don’t write? You’re welcome to gift a session to your favorite writer 😉. NYWC’s write-ins welcome writers at all levels of experience. Ideal for participants who are unable to commit to a long-term workshop, these 90-minute sessions are designed to be generative. In each write-in, participants will respond to optional prompts provided by the leader. You can write any genre and use this time however suits you best—to journal; make a to-do list; write a letter; create a poem, stories, essays, plays, or rants—or anything else that inspires you. After the writing time has elapsed, participants have the option to share their brand-new pieces with the group. The goal is for you to leave each write-in with new writing you feel good about. Visit our website for full details, pricing, and discount codes, or email us at [email protected].

It's that time again folksies! That's right, we have another of our popular workshops inked in for this coming Thursday! Picture This! - Thurs 28th Mar @ 7pm UTC If you haven't been to Picture This! before, here is a brief description to whet yer whistles... This is an online writing workshop for all abilities. Led by Ashley Edge, we will be looking at ekphrastic writing. Put simply, ekphrastic means "descriptive", and when we talk about it in the literary sense, we tend to mean writing a piece that is a description of a scene, most commonly a work of art, or that has been influenced/inspired by the art work. This is a workshop in which you will be prompted by different paintings each month. We will be wittering about the art, the feelings and thoughts they evoke in us, getting inspired by them and then writing in whatever form your mind is urging you to. This is a great place for those new to writing, as well the pro's, in equal measure. So what are you waiting for, grab yourself a ticket! Tickets: https://lnkd.in/eK_xX6xP Approx 2 hrs of fun (Pay what you feel/can) PayPal: https://lnkd.in/e3MBKBiD No hate will be tolerated. So no racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism and no punching down. Equality, equity and diversity are not just words.

How to Avoid Publication Pitfalls 3 Problem: You don’t know your audience. Solution: Ask who you are you publishing for? Do some basic market research. Find out your audience's gender, age, income, education and interests. Conduct some surveys and focus groups. Also, regularly ask them what they'd like to see in the publication. #publicationdesign #editorial #editing #media #layoutdesign #LayoutArtist #pitfall #audienceengagement #AudienceConnection #AudienceTargeting #audienceparticipation
