As I publish this video, the 2024 Presidential Election is one week away. I guess 30% of people are die-hard Trump fans, while 30% are die-hard Harris fans. As for the rest of us, we'd rather have a different choice. The United States has modified its election process throughout the years, but we still need to tweak our system of self-government to get it right. This video illustrates what it will take to honor the self-government ideal and make better selections for presidential candidates. You will see two ways employees elect a CEO to lead their company. One way shows how to get the results we are currently getting with our highly polarizing primary/general election process. I will illustrate a second way that shows how employees can elect a CEO who does a great job leading their company to prosperity. We can do the same for the United States of America. It won't be easy, and it will require a great deal of effort on the part of the people. However, if we genuinely want self-government, it's worth the effort. We must educate ourselves, separate ourselves from political party loyalty, and eliminate primary elections. We can do it! https://lnkd.in/gcgXGaCM

One of the great differentiators between the good and the great in business, particularly in marketing, is taking a supposed negative and flipping it to positive. In our tissue business, we can see competitors secretly “trimming” their sheet size, hence undermining consumer value. But they save money doing this. The good might say, “Let’s trim our sheet size too so we can gain the same cost savings.” The great will say, “We have a bigger sheet and give better value. Let’s show this to consumers!” As businesspeople and marketeers, we can learn from all walks of life. One of the greatest examples of flipping a negative to a positive occurred in the 1980’s in a Presidential debate between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale. Reagan’s advancing age was a huge question in the campaign—he would be the oldest President in history if elected. In a debate setting he had to field the tough questions about his age and stamina. This sequence below was perhaps the moment when he swung the whole campaign to victory. His poll numbers skyrocketed in the following days. The best flip negatives to positives. They embrace who and what they are. And they know a little humour is always a good thing! Enjoy. It’s 1 minute well worth it.

I am always amused when someone says, "I don't want to talk politics", or, "I don't deal in politics", or my favorite, "politics has nothing to do with my life", or some such close iteration. Nonsense. #politics is part of everything we do. Here's a preview of the new educational bend of my "#Media Intelligence" speaking series. Imagine the conversations and revelations that a discussion here would generate. The Daily Show's John Stewart has just done a thorough roundup of some out-of-touch marketing we are experiencing today and I (Jay Mandel) watched laughter at times but mostly frustration and a desire to better. It's disheartening to see how some marketing efforts are so off-target, out of touch with reality and even polarizing to much of the product's audience. What can everyday marketers do to help companies avoid making such embarrassing mistakes in this challenging environment? How can we make ourselves and our companies accountable to the people who buy our products? As a marketer, if you worked for one of the companies in the video, do you feel you would have any influence or power to steer your company away from making such misguided and out-of-touch decisions? If not, do you want to change that? Join us at the Marketing Accountability Council, let's hold ourselves accountable!
