One of the most rewarding parts of my work is being able to examine the future alongside Jared Weiner - my partner in work and life. Many of our days end with a glass of wine, sitting and discussing our perspectives on technology, culture, the universe, and all things existential and interesting to us. That is why, when it came to the Foreword of my book, I knew just the right person to write it. Jared acknowledges that while the rising prominence of AI is obvious, real questions remain about how much impact it will truly have in many different aspects of both our work lives and our personal lives. We know that some areas of our lives will be profoundly impacted by AI, while others, not as much. And it won't be the same formula for each person, entity, institution or organization. Just finished reading 'AI 2041: Ten Visions for Our Future' by Kai-Fu Lee and 陈楸帆Stanley Qiufan Chan, and it has left me with a lot to think about. The authors achieve something special with their book, which they call 'science fiction realism'. It's a combination of very relatable human stories set in the future, along with rigorous scientific and technological analysis of the possibilities, impacts, and risks of AI. The book presents ten imaginative scenarios of what the world might look like in 20 years, each grounded in real AI technologies that are already developing today. Imagination is often called a human superpower, and while that can sound like an empty slogan, this book shows imagination in action in a way that leaves you nothing but marvel. What makes 'AI 2041' especially engaging is the blend of storytelling and analysis — each chapter offers a fictional narrative that explores a potential future, followed by a deep dive into the underlying AI trends shaping that vision already today. From AI-enhanced education to personalized healthcare, the book paints a picture of a future filled with both promise and complex challenges. The possibilities and opportunities of AI are immense — from transforming industries to creating entirely new kinds of jobs, enhancing quality of life, and solving pressing global issues like climate change and disease. No technology is good or bad in itself, but certainly technology is not neutral either. It's how we choose to use AI that will determine its impact, and the positive opportunities clearly outweigh the negatives if approached thoughtfully. I especially appreciate the constructive and positive ethos throughout the book, along with the nuanced argumentation and balanced view on risks. It raises questions about the social, ethical, economic, and political impacts of these technologies that we, as professionals and as individuals, need to be considering today. If you've read this book or have thoughts on AI's impact on the near future, I'd love to hear your perspectives. Which of these scenarios feels most realistic to you? Which challenges are we ready for, and where might we still be falling behind? https://www.ai2041.com/ #AI #future #scifi #realism

"The Big Nine: How The Tech Titans And Their Thinking Machines Could Warp Humanity" is one of the most insightful and comprehensive books on Artificial Intelligence that I've come across. In this work, Amy Webb delves into the foundations of AI, exploring the individuals behind the systems, their motivations, and the technology that enables corporations to create a wide range of intelligent systems that may not align with our hopes, desires, or vision for humanity's future. The book provides a clear understanding of what Artificial Intelligence is and highlights the significant role played by the Nine Titans in its development. Additionally, it offers intriguing scenarios about the next 50 years as AI continues to evolve. In the concluding section, Webb presents both tactical and strategic solutions to the challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence, along with practical recommendations for governments and the leaders of the Nine Titans. "The Big Nine" is essential reading for anyone interested in Artificial Intelligence, as it paints a vivid picture of what the future may hold with the ongoing advancements in this field. #TheBigNine #AmyWebb #BookRecommendation

If the spirits of Friedrich Engels and Karl Marx were reincarnated as AI researchers in the 2020s, this is the book they might have written: "Feeding the Machine: The Hidden Human Labor Powering A.I." Many of the personal narratives in this book are eye-opening. The analysis it provides of the overall "machine behind the machine" (the global economics system behind the operation of AI platforms) has a lot to commend it too. I'm reminded of the observation that "AI" should stand for "Anonymous Indians". "Feeding the Machine" provides many examples of how the apparently near-magical abilities of AI depend on the efforts of multitudes of data annotators who are outside of our awareness most of the time. My main issue with the book was the authors' far-too-quick dismissal of the idea that AI could pose an existential threat any time soon. Those of us who care about beneficial outcomes of AI can, and should, contemplate the full spectrum of AI's shortcomings - both local and global. As is often the case, the Marxist analysis provided in this book acts as a useful counterweight to the accounts given by more mainstream researchers. I recommend that people read it with a mind that is both open and thoughtful, and forgive the authors their occasional blindspots. https://lnkd.in/eAy8SHEj

💫 Approaching the topic of AI with an exploratory mind Before we delve into specific questions around AI over the next couple of weeks, here are some initial perspectives from our community to get you thinking: - How generative AI is opening up the possibilities for daily impact, for everyone, not just software engineers - Cambridge's role being synonymous with ground breaking technologies - Being at a kink in the J-curve in terms of the number of applications, computational power, and the amount of talent working in this space Let's start the conversation here - what do you think? If you want to dig into more detail you can listen to Neil Lawrence's short talk here https://vist.ly/3mmvgda, which has lots of insights from his new book Atomic Human and really challenges us to all think more laterally about AI. #Founders #Expert #Community #University #Cambridge #Entrepreneurs #Investors #AI #MachineLearning

🎙️ "Without a fundamental restructuring of how organizations work, the benefits of AI will never be recognized." – Ethan Mollick, Co-Intelligence 🎙️ 💡 This powerful insight from Mollick's new book is where The Centaurian, 🔮Kes Sampanthar ✨, and I find ourselves in violent agreement with Professor Mollick, despite some shortcomings of the wildly popular "jagged frontier" report he co-authored. 📖 ✂ The challenge organizations face isn't about cost-cutting or automating existing processes with AI. It's about deeply understanding human creativity, the neuroscience of how we think, and how AI actually works. 🧠🎨🤖 🤓 If you're an expert in your field, the way you use AI will be fundamentally different. It's not about outsourcing creativity or research, but augmenting your skills in powerful ways. 🦸♀️🦸♂️ 🔀 Ready to restructure your thinking and work?
